Re: Major advancements for Texas CHL holders
That's what I plan on doing. I already offer NRA HFS, Basic Pistol, & First Steps Pistol. Once I'm certified for TX CHL (still waiting on DPS to schedule me ) and teaching CHL classes, I plan on offering the NRA courses to students who appear to be....less familiar, shall we say....with pistol. I won't require them to take my additional courses, of course. Buti will strongly recommend that they do so.TexasCajun wrote:I suppose instructors could also look into expanding their training class offering. You know. It is my humble opinion that any CHL instructor who does not do this (or does not at least have someone they can refer such students to) is doing themselves, the student, and the public a huge disservice.

Re: Major advancements for Texas CHL holders
Most of this stems from a editorial mistake. I had originally used the adjective "opportunistic" in an attempt to distinguish unscrupulous instructors (lawyers and lawmakers) from those who, like yourself, have our best interests at heart. I took it out because it seemed weak, and I wanted to make the point more strongly.The_Busy_Mom wrote:Well, I can tell you that I am not a CHL instructor for the money. And as I posted a while back, I wasn't even alive, nor voting age, when the laws that affected our gun-carrying abilities were implemented. I am simply helping to educate those around me so that they can carry within the law, and do my part to change the law from the inside out. The more people we have carrying within the law, then maybe the greater chance we have to get back to the original meaning of 'shall not be infringed'. But shame on your for not having enough sight to understand that your 'lump-'em-all-together' approach won't win you what you want. Keep Calm, Carry On.Bitterclinger wrote:Remember, back in 1776 the original program was free, required 0 hours of training, and had NO registration or licensing of any kind. I'd like to see all of the states return to that program. From that perspective, the progressives and opportunists should be glad to have gotten what they were able to get from prohibition thus far. These bills represent a minor victory, but the pendulum will swing back the other way when progressives outside of Texas can no longer tolerate living in the states they ruin, and decide to move here.
If you think it's called the "Bill of Rights" because "Bill of Things Properly Trained Taxpayers Could Do If They Met All The Requirements and Could Afford to Pay Additional Taxes in the Form of License Fees" was too long then maybe you have an honest argument. A stupid argument, but an honest argument. No. I suspect everybody knows EXACTLY what "shall not be infringed" means, but they either, A) don't like it because an armed citizenry is harder to control, and/or B) there is nothing in it which would help line the pockets of lawyers, lawmakers or CHL instructors.

I will however stand behind my point. That being: when we (through mismanagement of OUR government) create huge bureaucracies to manage licensing and other forms of regulations we also create a class of people dependent on those bureaucracies (bureaucrats.) Sometimes, we even allow this class to create powerful unions and lobbying groups which seems OK until we realize the bureaucracy was created in error, or that it is no longer necessary. At that point the bureaucrats will usually have positioned themselves so as to make it more or less impossible to dismantle said bureaucracies with anything short of an armed revolt.
Because: history.

You might find that most of them didn't resist the change because they simply haven't gotten the word, yet. The other local instructors that I spend time with get their news from me. They would be totally unaware of the coming changes if I didn't tell them.RoyGBiv wrote:.... although your scope of the potential problem is too narrow.Bitterclinger wrote:That being: when we (through mismanagement of OUR government) create huge bureaucracies to manage licensing and other forms of regulations we also create a class of people dependent on those bureaucracies (bureaucrats.) I would not want to take a class with an instructor that won't take the time to keep up with the laws/changes.KC5AV wrote:You might find that most of them didn't resist the change because they simply haven't gotten the word, yet. The problem is - how do you know?poppo wrote:I would not want to take a class with an instructor that won't take the time to keep up with the laws/changes.
I don't know how many times renewal students have told us they learned more in their renewal class than they learned in their initial class from someone else. Now that there will only be an initial class, it is up to students to find that up-to-date instructor the first time around. Since most people, it seems, are shopping for price only....well, you get what you pay for.
We will do the best we can to cram as much good, and current, info as we can into 4-6 hours. I can't speak for others.

I'm with you, Crossfire.
BTW - was watching Fox News today about the lady in Oregon who didn't have a gun to protect herself from her violent ex-boyfriend, and was told by 911 that they didn't have any one to send out. To make a long story short, I thought to myself, "I need to use this in my CHL class." And then I had a second thought - where in the world am I going to fit that in with the reduced hours. We are all going to be doing a bunch of cramming, looks like.

I usually find myself on the same side of the fence as you and your husband, but I dont understand this thought process. Why would you feel it necessary to show this to your CHL class? The fact that they are taking your class says that they get it, they don't need to be convinced. Once instructors understand that we don't need to be "sold" on the need to carry it will be very easy to recognize and eliminate unneeded material and fall well within the new time limits.The_Busy_Mom wrote:I'm with you, Crossfire.

Re: Major advancements for Texas CHL holders
I don't find it necessary, but I like to use real-world examples in my class. I teach many more men than I do women, and this would be a way to convey, albeit in a different manner, the need for women to be able to protect themselves. I have read countless threads with men that are trying to 'convince' their wives the get their CHL. There was a thread some weeks ago about who a woman calls first in an intruder-emergency: husband, police, or 911? This Oregon situation goes to prove some real-world circumstances, situational awareness, etc. for women. And it wouldn't be showing the video, it would be part of discussion to get ideas flowing. Those are some of the things were are going to miss out on with reduced hours.jmra wrote:I usually find myself on the same side of the fence as you and your husband, but I dont understand this thought process. Re: Major advancements for Texas CHL holders
I believe we will have a lot more students wanting to take the class now with it being no more than 6 hours plus range time. Folks 10 hours is a long time.switch wrote:You can take as long as you want. I doubt if DPS will criticize anyone if the class if longer than 6 hours. Ask your customers how long they want to sit and listen to you. :)
What do you do for renewal students. (I knew an instructor that gave everyone - including renewals - a 15 hour class. :( ). glad I did not have to listen to him. :)
If you can renew someone in 4 hours (cover all the material), you should be able to do an initial class in 6.
Actually, it's not up to us what we want/need/think. The legislature has decided how long it should take. We need to deal with it.
Just glad it's not like Hunter Safety - it's 10 hours too - but HAS to be held over 2 days. :( (Probably makes for a better class. The mind can only absorb what the rear can endure. :) )

That is why I have a FB page and 90% of my students are on it. I continue education and get quite a response from students. I feel it is my responsibility to keep them updated and informed. IMHOThe_Busy_Mom wrote:I'm with you, Crossfire.

Agree. I have a bunch of people that don't want to give up a whole weekend day. I understand this could be considered a commitment issue but they also have a commitment to their jobs, families, church and other obligations. I can now offer a weeknight class and they will not have to give up precious family time. IMHO. I know people will disagree but that is their right.

Re: Major advancements for Texas CHL holders
So I'm a little confused & hoping someone can clarify one of the new house bills.. The HB 48, the one that deals with renewals.. Does this mean no one ever needs to take a renewal class? (shooting/classroom) Even 1st-2nd renewals? Just trying to get a crystal clear understanding? Example, if I'm a regular Joe & coming up on my 1st renewal, what all would I need to do?
