Ahh,ok, thought that was the topic at hand as you asked..

Statement:
Federal law makes it illegal and punishable by 5 years in a federal pen for copying my us army ID, texas law makes it a class c misdemeanor to copy my texas military ID, so aww darn. I have never had my DL copied at any MD's office
Your response:
What is the penal code / reference for these two laws?
I answered 50% of your question with a response to ONE of the TWO laws you asked about.

:tiphat:
Sorry for the confusion..
In response to your follow up question... No law I know of forbides photocopying a state issued DL or ID card.. TX has a law on swiping the Mag strip.. but not copying, far as i can tell :cheers2:

18 USC § 701 - Official badges, identification cards, other insignia.

Whoever manufactures, sells, or possesses any badge, identification card, or other insignia, of the design prescribed by the head of any department or agency of the United States for use by any officer or employee thereof, or any colorable imitation thereof, or photographs, prints, or in any other manner makes or executes any engraving, photograph, print, or impression in the likeness of any such badge, identification card, or other insignia, or any colorable imitation thereof, except as authorized under regulations made pursuant to law, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Thanks for the federal law but I'm not talking federal ID, just wanted to get that one out of the way so we can move back to what the topic at hand is. Federal IDs Can be grouped in to commercial establishments and for official use only. Go to the VA and they will legally make all the copies they want.

I am only really talking about the state of Texas identification and how this topic started. It was said that if I, or anyone copies a driver license, it is illegal and I challenge this as it has been stated there are laws for it. Again, where is the Texas law that says I am breaking the law if I copy a Texas driver license? :rules: :cheers2:

Outside of the request quoted about, I am not asking for the federal laws. I happen to have a couple federal ID and as of about 2008, they stated sending out the mailers to remind me that I cannot and should not allow anyone to copy my ID except for official government use. They even give a hotline number that I can call to see if someone is legit or not.

I never said that there was a law against copying the texas DL or CHL, there is a law against copying my Texas Military ID card(cac) and my US Army ID. It is my personal preference to not copy these 2 items(tx DL and CHL), it also against the law to copy some of my professional licenses unless it pertains to the subject at hand IE HVAC Contractors License/Electricians License and my EIT License. If I mis stated I apologize, if I didn't and you just couldn't see the trees for the forest, well hmmm!

No problems here. I have been searching for and can not find any Texas law. I was beginning to think I just did not know what I was looking for.

I know there is a law but I'm not sure what is approved because I know bars can swipe TDL's for age verification the State is ok with that.

As I stated above,,, yes, there is a regulation on use of the data encoded to the DL mag strip.. That was not the question being discussed.. it was photocopying.
but since you asked
https://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/op ... jc0337.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Texas Attorney General had this to say "Magnetic stripe information contained on a driver's license or identification card issued by the Department of Public Safety may be utilized only by law enforcement and other governmental agency personnel acting in their official capacities."

Or, you can look up the actual law... "Interested parties can look up Traffic Code 521.126 for the actual laws."
Range Rule: "The front gate lock is not an acceptable target."

My supposition is that almost any photocopying of the Federal ID would be allowable provided the intent wasn't to make an illegal copy to try to pass off. Also, if you read that statute there's some really interesting stuff... including preventing wearing a false military uniform the Panama Canal Zone, which hasn't been under US jurisdiction for what...30+ years no (thanks, President Carter). Oh then there's the desecration of the Flag...that one's been OK for a while now (thanks, SCOTUS).
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

Just purchased a Bushmaster .223 from Wal-Mart. No copy of CHL or DL required. Only non standard question was Phone Number I guess in case of a paper work problem.....and yes I complied as they already had more information than the IRS (less SSN )!
