I was not eligible until 2000. By the time that rolled around I had every intention of getting the license. I even mailed off the little pre-app postcard to get a packet sent to me. As I recall, the postcard was to determine if you were eligible and if so you would then receive the individually numbered packet in the mail. Well, I got the packet but never followed through with completing it and taking the course. I was a whole lot younger back then and it was a money thing. So I managed to procrastinate for the next 12 years and then I started to realize that the world we live in was getting worse by the day. Took the class in February of last year and received the license in April. I've almost had mine a full year now. :txflag:

I took my class in 1995 and paid for the two year version. However, because my Birthday is in January, it was good until 1999 which really worked out to three years. As Mr. Cotton stated, the first was valid starting January 1, 1996. Kept it current and am now on my fifth license.

I sent off for the paperwork, got the huge pack in the mail, and read thru it. I had an arrest for DWI in the late 70s in another state. At that time, DWI was not the big deal it is now. I could not decide if it was something I needed to report, and did not really want to dig up old skeletons, so I thruw the CHL application in a drawer and never followed up.

Fast forward all these years, and with the increased violence, and gun grabber craziness going on, I felt it was my duty to get my CHL. Plus I found this forum to guide me thru it! I wish I had not waited.

I waited a whole year, just to make sure this thing wasn't a passing fad. Took the class in 1996, got the license in early 1997.

Then, went to instructor school in 2000, and have been teaching ever since.

It seems that the two year version was handed out more often than the four. One friend I have was given the four year version and acted like he jot the lotto. :smilelol5: anytime anyone spoke of having a CHL, he would be the first to show his four year permit. Lol... He strutted around like a banty rooster with that thing. And after all that, he never renewed it.

I have my paper work from the first class. I completed the class on OCT. 1,1995. The class was taught by a Brazoria County Deputy. The course was presented over a 2 day time frame, 5 hours each day. I mailed everything in immediately. I'm not sure when the license arrived, however I don't recall it taking long. My license was for 2 years. What I have never understood is, although my license was part of the first one's issued, it has 8 digits. Of those 8 digits, 4 digits are zeros, license number is 0#0#0#0#. I always thought that was unique. When presenting it for a purchase, several people have commented on the unusal number.

You use the Texas CHL for ID?

That should be a No NO If you think about it a little !!

A guy in my class was coming back nfrom a convention in the Commie state of calif. and used his TX CHL for ID at theairport in LA.. His wife came home and he caught another flight 8 hours later.

The hand gun must remained concealed at all times, If you show the The chl you have just informed the person
that you possibly have a gun on you, even if it is @ home.
( is that a violation I dont know but no one except Law enforcement will ever see mine; students in my class see it so they know what it looks like)

Some folks are wannna bes and we have a lot here in Texas.

No violation to use the CHL for ID. Some places are too ignorant or stubborn to accept it as ID and you're right, it might not be the best idea to use it like that. However, I think he meant for firearm purchases, although I could be wrong.

Kalifornia, what can you say? :banghead: Haven't been there in over 20 years and I don't see any reason to go back.

o b juan,
Like most people with a license, I always use my CHL when purchaseing a firearm. Do you not use yours for firearm puchases? It is not illegal to show your license, otherwise, I agree, it is not the best of ideas.
As to your other comment about "wanna bes". I take that as a snide remark and find it offensive.

I took my class in early January '96.
Couldn't afford the state fee at the time and it was a couple years later before I sent the stuff in and got my first license.
