I'm trying to think, but I can't recall of a CHL-involved homicide that turned out to be a bad shoot.

Would this one (assuming it truly was a bad shoot) be the first one since 1995?

The DPS website used to (I think they still do) link to some demographic type statistics that broke down the criminal prosecutions of CHL holders...I haven't needed to look at that in a few years, but somethig pings in the back of my mind that I did see one licensee in the "murder" column...

Whether that was from a self-defense shooting that was determined to not be a (for lack of a better term) "good" shoot...I don't recall, nor was it elaborated on in that data...

Might be able to find it again...I'll go look...

Here's the PDF file from the DPS on convictions of CHL licensees...

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... rt2005.pdf

This is from 2005, but the links go back a few years on the DPS website...

I knew there was some interesting facts about this data...Just haven't looked at this data in a while...

Kind of answers the questions regarding what offences have been sucessfully prosecuted...

Not a lot precentage-wise...

But you can certainly tabulate up ALL the data and get a feel for what has been going on over the 10+ years we've had the law...

There are a couple of strange items in this data:

UNL CARRY HANDGUN LIC HOLDER..............................Total: 16 CHL: 14
UNL CARRY HANDGUN LIC HOLDER ALCH PREM/CORR Total: 1 CHL: 0

I guess they're referring to PC §46.035 here. How can someone who is not a license holder be charged under this statute?

UNL CARRY WEAPON/WEAPONS FREE ZONE...............Total: 6 CHL: 0

I guess this refers to schools. It seems to indicate that no CHL holder has been caught in a school or at a school-sponsored function.

UNL CARRYING WEAPON ...........................................Total: 2,922 CHL: 27

If this refers to PC §46.02, were people caught with knives and clubs?

most of them seem like good, hard working people to me, but when I take the bus, it's usually at 0630
Hah, that's why. Most of the losers on the bus aren't awake that early, unless they are high and never went to sleep.

The problem with those stats is that we have no idea if a gun was involved (except for carrying where prohibited). Negligent homicide could have been a car wreck. Murder could have been strangling or stabbing.

Even if we knew a CHL shot someone and was convicted of murder, we don't necessarily know that the license was a factor -- it could have taken place at the actor's home or business, where no license is required. Or it could have been with a long gun.

Ch. 11 TV news just had a short report on this shooting. The Grand Jury "no-billed" the shooter, finding that he shot in self-defense.

That is some good news. Least we get some good time in the spot light too.

News reports must not have been accurate then. The guy he shot must have done more than was reported.

Yeah. How would one get a hold of a transcript of the hearing? I'm sure it would make an interesting read.

seems (as usual) they didn't have or give all the facts at the time. The report I saw yesterday said the man killed had a history of violence including assault, & assault w/ deadly a weapon. Record even included 2 previous assaults on a Metro bus.

The media sure is creative. Apparently they can manufacture a story if they don't have one.
