I have yet to call them I have had pretty good luck with email. I just got my pin # last week. They have been fast on responding to emails. About 2 hours or so.

91 days

from receipt by DPS to online status change of Application Completed - License issued.

Background check seemed to be the holdup.

Waiting on the plastic.

Travis county resident - no 29's - clear and current - ALWAYS.
My last Tx CHL expired about 5 years ago.
I did live out of state for 3 years since my last Texas CHL (Alabama)

BTW - Alabama "Pistol Permit" took a 20 minute visit to the Sherriff's office!

(Expired) renewal, 55 days door to door. Not quite the 3 or so weeks for my first renewal, but not like some of the horror stories I have read. I definitely think Charles is correct regarding the "squeaky wheel". Also, don't be afraid to ask for a name and extension number so you can speak to the same technician.

Benefits of Certified, Return Receipt

#709

Post by TraCoun »

After watching the website patiently for several weeks and seeing "Processing Application", on about day 50 I called.

I was told that my application was NOT IN THE SYSTEM :headscratch . The person I talked to was not rude, but showed no inclination to HELP or look further :frown5: . I heard "It's not in the system" three times and finally said 'Thank you' and hung up.

After getting some advice and help from my best friend  , I sent them an e-mail. I was able to tell them:

1. I mailed it certified, return receipt
2. The date and time that it was signed for in their office
3. I had seen it as "Processing" for several weeks
4. I logged in with my SSN each time and could not log in with an incorrect one.

I never got an e-mail answer, but the NEXT DAY when I went to the website the status had changed to "LICENSE ISSUED". :hurry:

It physically arrived at my house on Saturday, 2/3 ... and I had left for the TSRA meetings on Friday. :grumble Oh well, at least I got it. :cheers2:

I recommend sending it certified return receipt and following up on that on the postal service website.

Thanx,
TraCoun

Received my CHL today

Post by DDuck »

Here's how it went for me.

-- Took the class on 11/14/06, I had prepaid and already had my pin &
packet.
-- Mailed packet certified, return receipt. 11/15/06.
-- Packet received by DPS on 11/17/06
-- Status changed to processing application on 01/09/07
-- Status changed to application completed license issued or certificate
active on 02/13/07.
-- License received in the mail today 02/16/07

So counting all days from the day my packet was received by the DPS it was 91 days.

I do have to take into account that I couldn't have mailed it in at a worse time of year with all the holidays, plus a day for Pres. Fords death and I believe a couple of snow days down in Austin.

Edited to add:
I think that is about 57 work days if I counted all their days off correctly

CHL delays

#711

Post by dentonbill »

Got my permit 5 months to the day after mailing in my packet. Here is what I learned. Don't wait, sent in your stuff as soon as possible. Don't rely on inked fingerprints, get them done electronically. Count the days, if you don't get your permit in 60 days or renewal in 45, call them and find out what is the problem. And keep on keeping after them till you get what you want.
I got your back.

How Long??

#715

Post by 7GenTex »

The wife's took from Oct. 23rd 2006 to March 14th 2007

Almost 5 months.

No plastic yet - but "it's in the mail today".

No problems, no redo of prints, and no comments from DPS on why - ?????????

The wife finally called DPS today, after numerous emails, and they said it all seemed complete - then they called back in about 2 hours and said it was in the mail.

I really wish I had read this thread before I sent off my app. I did not send it certified mail, so have no way to know of receipt. I did however, send it from the post office about 20 blocks south of the DPS office, so transit time can't be bad. I sent off my apps on 03/07, so i'm in at just over a week now. It's going to be a long wait.

Fortunately, I was advised to send in proof of citizenship (a copy of my Certificate of Birth Abroad), so the fact that I was born outside the U.S. won't be an issue, as I see it has been for several others in this thread.

Had I known the advantage of doing the online process, I would have definitely gone there as well. I expect that I'll be sitting in limbo for another few weeks until I receive a PIN in the mail or bug them about it over the phone.

So here I am, day 8 - fidgeting and hoping nothing bad happens with my app.

In the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations for summertime IWB holsters for my PA63 (Walther PPK clone)?

I mailed my application the first week of Sept, received my PIN in Oct. but didnt receive my license until the middle of January. The reason for the delay is b/c I had extenuating circumstances that required my application to go before the Medical Advisory Board.

Mine took 70 days exactly from the time I took the course to plastic in hand. That includes the two days I took before mailing in the package, and the time it took to return the fingerprint cards which I forgot to sign.

Had I been on the ball, I'm sure my permit would have been in my hands in 50 days or less.
