Cannot carry extra magazines??
Hi all, I recently took a CHL course in N Texas and I am still waiting on my card. I was discussing IWB holsters with a coworker and mentioned about mag holders. He said that it doesn't matter because in Texas you are not allowed to carry extra magazines in concealed carry, only what is in the gun.
This was apparently told to him by his CHL instructor in his class. The research I have done does not mention anything about carrying extra mags, and this is the first I've heard anything like this. I contacted TEXAS DPS and they will not answer the question, just a canned response to contact a lawyer. Is this something that was once on the books and removed? Or is this possibly just a misunderstanding by his CHL instructor of the Texas laws.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Your friend is incorrect, and welcome to the forum.
There is no restriction on carrying extra magazines in Texas.

You can carry as many guns and mags as you can carry, provided they stay concealed.

The mags don't have to be concealed, do they? (It's definitely recommended. . . )Kythas wrote:You can carry as many guns and mags as you can carry, provided they stay concealed.
I agree that there is no limit on firearms, rounds, or spare mags.

Your friend owes you a 6 pack for steering you wrong.
That CHL instructor should hand in his license.
Interesting factoid: You can carry loaded magazines all you want even without a CHL. They don't even have to be concealed (sorry, Kythas). There's no law against carrying ammunition in your pocket (or on your belt, etc.) in convenient ammunition holders (i.e., "magazines", or the more horrifying, "clips" ). It's only the "ammunition launcher" that requires a CHL

Re: Cannot carry extra magazines??
Yep. No mag or gun limits in Texas.
I normally carry 1 spare mag.....but I've been known to carry 2 or even a spare mag and an extra gun.
Now, if you travel to New Mexico, you're only allowed to carry one gun (but still no mag restrictions).
So just because that's Texas law, be sure to research other states laws if you're going to travel.

Indeed.
I can see how an instructor (or student) could mess up a bit on calculating when someone does or does not have to take a renewal course, or some of the bits about how many suspensions before revocation, but to come up with an item like this out of the blue....

It wouldn't be the first time I've seen an instructor go into vapor lock and then spew nonsense. Pity too, because these are simple things to remember.ELB wrote:...ITRY2FLY wrote: ...

Re: Cannot carry extra magazines??
Thanks for the quick replies guys! This sounded a bit fishy, and I'm a firm believer in knowing FACTS before jumping to a false conclusion.
I sincerely hope that his instructor is not actually teaching this, as this completely goes against what I have been taught about 'Two is one, and one is none', and the advantages of carrying extra mag(s). I really should find out if this instructor is teaching this as a matter of practice or if this was just a misunderstanding. Thinking this may be the former since he mentioned the instructor explained this as "...(someone) having extra magazines could be interpreted as possibly using or desiring to use excessive force if involved in a shooting....". This sounds like a case of teaching improper information with potentially lethal consequences for those who may have otherwise desired to carry an extra mag or two who are now afraid to because of what was said or implied in this CHL course.

Re: Cannot carry extra magazines??
Hm. If it was as you described, sounds more like an Instructor giving his opinion on extra mags and your friend misinterpreting as "not legal".
His opinion is still pretty dumb (I think).
If its a good shoot, it won't matter if you have an extra magazine, or "deadly cop killing hollowpoints", or any other silliness.

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of instructors who leave their students confused about law v. opinion.

I always carry my trusty 32 bullet glock mag in my truck all the time filled with hollow points.
