Lubbock police officers arrested Martinez, but this is the second time this week that a Tech student`s house has been burglarized. And this is the second time a Tech student has put the bad guy on the other end of the barrel.

Tech is 2-0 this week!

Both Harmon and Hoskinson had concealed handgun licenses.

The bad guys are lucky - so very, VERY lucky - that the resident didn't simply drop them where they stood once they'd broken in.

The resident is lucky that the intruders didn't respond to his verbal challenge with immediate gunfire of their own - it's downright dangerous to assume that BGs who break in are unarmed.

A Red Raider? Poor Martinez was probably there cleaning when he was pounced, pelted with dry ice and batteries, and then reported as a suspect.

I kid, but look at the email I got from our university the other day:

"On Sunday, January 21, 2007, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a Texas A&M
international graduate student reported that her backpack was taken from
her person. The victim and another female international graduate
student were walking north bound on Ireland Street near the Reed
McDonald building on campus. Both females heard footsteps approaching
from behind. The victim turned and noticed two male subjects and turned
back around. One of the male subjects pushed the victim to the ground
and stole her black Jansport backpack with contents. After the backpack
was taken, both male subjects ran south bound on Ireland Street and
turned west bound on Ross Street. No injuries were reported. No weapon
was reported to be involved.

The victim described both male suspects as African American males, thin
build, and approximately five feet nine inches tall. One of the males
was wearing a blue sweat shirt with a hood, black pants, and possibly a
cap."


And the day following that message this was reported in the Battalion:

"I am disgusted with the way the University treats its white students. A house is broken into, the people inside assaulted by local kids with baseball bats, and the University does not inform the student body of the crime. Nevertheless, an international student is robbed, and it makes front page news. As students, we need to be informed of both of these incidents. It is ridiculous that the University only cares about students of different melanin content. My brother gets put, headfirst, through a TV by a group of College Station residents and the University doesn't tell the student body of the mob of locals going from place to place looking to beat people up. This act of only acknowledging minority crime needs to be put to a stop. We are all Aggies, and we all need to be informed of what to watch for when we are living here, be it robbery or senseless lynching parties.

I got a friend up @ Tech... unfortuantly he's in the dorms and guns aren't allowed in the dorms for personal protection.... kinda sad when u think about it. I can only imagine how vulnerable the dorms really are.

A new channel did a report here in Austin on how vulnerable the dorms really are to the outside world @ UT. It's kinda scary if you are a student and worried about the outside world getting into the "secure" dorms.

I realize this is not your letter, but I hope the school answered it properly. The correct answer may have to do with the location of the crimes. The school is required by federal law to let the students know about crimes that occur on campus, but there is no law concerning crimes that occur off campus. I am guessing that the house broken into is a regular house off campus, not a fraternity house on campus, but this might be part of the reason anyway.

I always carry a blade because its legal and the university allows it.

I don't carry pepper spray yet because though its legal, the university doesn't allow it. I'm about to the point where I'll say they can go suck a lemon, maybe even petition the university to change the rule.

So far as I know they didn't answer anyone, but apparently by law they are required, or volunteer, more information. The incident I posted was off campus, infact I've only ever had one incident warning that was on campus sent to me. All the other ones were in off campus housing or within a mile or so of campus. The lady who had her pack stolen was about 100 yards from campus, the previous grad student attacked was a few hundred yards from campus. When I posted about the guy who ran around sexually assaulting women was miles from campus. From what I understand this guy's brother was off campus in apartment about 300 yards from school property.

I just think its stupid that pepper spray of all things isn't allowed.
