Re: Finished class but dissapointed
Guess I just got lucky. Used a guy in Arlington who has been teaching the course for a number of years (one of the first I believe). Working with a number of local leo's and local da's I quickly discovered that either I had learned a great deal in my class or these other guy's are just not up to speed. Was sitting in a meeting with local pastors when a detective presented state codes (that he had obtained the day before from the local da)stating that church carry was not permitted. It took me 10 seconds on my phone to pull up docs from dps to show that the regs he was quoting were repealed 10 years prior.
The funny thing was our instructor prepared us for that encounter (knowing that our group worked in churches).
If you are in the dfw area I strongly recommend the kimberman. Chltx.com

...I took my class and renewal where one of the instructors was a former legislator who helped hammer out the bill...so we got a lot of good understanding of why as well as the legal understanding...very interesting...I learned a lot about the Texas way of doin' things...great experience...I've sent them 40 or so folks...they do it well...

Sorry to hear about your marginal experience in your CHL class; my instructor was wonderful; I learned (and retain) a lot. CHL classes, like any consumer product, varies. I did a lot of shopping around before plunking down my hard earned money. In any case, this forum is great!!!

I had a great experience at CHL Now. Randy Reiner was interested in his quality of work and said so before the class started. He was patient and allowed us to move at our own pace. I know that I asked too many questions, but we all laughed about that too, and he explained that questions brought about the best learning experience. I am impressed that he has as much energy as he does since he teaches classes every day of the month!
If you are near the west side of Houston, you might want to consider him.
PS: I hope you guys don't mind somebody saying something good about their class. I sat through a bad one once so I do understand how that feels.

I think my instructor should have been reported. all she did was go over the correct answers to the test. then asked if we had any questions about stuff in the dps book. we hardly went over any laws;she said to read the book if we wanted to know them all. and then rambled on and on about how she was a body guard in a past life and if we need somthing come to her pawn shop she works at to buy.

Agreed, I took my class with Randy Reiner and the morning session was awesome. Unfortunately he had to leave after our lunch break and had another instructor come in to do the afternoon session... wasn't such a good experience with the other instructor.sugar land dave wrote:I had a great experience at CHL Now. Re: Finished class but dissapointed
Often we are quick to complain but slow to acknowledge when something is done right. Several instructors contacted me and offered to allow me to sit in their class free of charge. This shows how the majority are focus on quality instruction. The closest offer was in League City.
I attended a class given by Justin Franklin (Southeast Texas CHL). He covered many thing I thought were critical in a non-hurried pace. The range was clean and well staffed.
When looking at the information available to cover it seem all instructors are challenged to stay focus and not go off too far in one direction or another.
Thanks Justin !!

Re: Finished class but dissapointed
That's a real shame that an instructor did not prepare and present in an acceptable fashion. I keep hearing about bad experiences like this. Please file a complaint with the CHL division at DPS. If enough folks file complaints, we can get this stopped. It's not good for any of us that spend lots of time keeping up to date and working on our programs to make sure they are interesting, captivating and completely informational in all required aspects.
BTW - Charles, I had a very interesting conversation with Mr. Day before my Saturday morning class. He had some nice things to say about you. Diane came in to do some recruiting as well. I wish I had her energy. We had a great class. If you do get a seminar together in the Austin area, book me a spot, I would like to come and meet you.

Re: Finished class but dissapointed
Kirk, perhaps the reason you were so disappointed is because you were exposed to this forum prior to taking the class. It almost certainly changed your view of what you were taught.

Re: Finished class but dissapointed
I have read many post before class and had an assumption of want I thought the class was going to be but even before finding this forum I believe the class would cover de-escalation in detail . Another downfall was I work for a company the believes in "death by powerpoint" the old overhead project was a let down. The instructor said he had new material but wasn't set up to use it. Still I didn't need one newspaper clipping after another showing local robberies, carjacking ect. I'm already convince to get a CHL so no need to hammer it in.baldeagle wrote:Kirk, perhaps the reason you were so disappointed is because you were exposed to this forum prior to taking the class. I still continue to learn from other here since there is not one absolute answer for everything.

You sometimes hear similar complaints from people who read the book before seeing the movie.baldeagle wrote:Kirk, perhaps the reason you were so disappointed is because you were exposed to this forum prior to taking the class. It almost certainly changed your view of what you were taught.

Re: Finished class but dissapointed
I took my class from an instructor who is a regular on this forum. I was also pretty disappointed by the class. I actually got more involved in reading this forum as a result of my poor experience with my CHL course. My course was heavy on crappy videos, military stories and stories of use of force which were clearly CCW use appropriate (though nothing about deciding continuum of force or fight vs flight situations), aluminum foil hat conversations about home security systems, and a visit (shill) from a semi local politician. Laws were almost completely glossed over as was a discussion on the where you can/can't carry. Instead we were essentially told the rules are in the book.
I'm hoping to attend a Cotton class someday. I've got a pretty good handle on my rights and responsibilities, but am on the forum daily hoping to learn more and improve my understanding of when to use and how to handle the situation following (God willing it will never be needed).
