One on-going piece of advice on this and in other venues, is to "call your lawyer". I don't have a lawyer. I don't know a lawyer. The one time I had a lawyer, he lost me 27 million dollars. :grumble I don't want to call him again.

So the question is: How many of you have lawyers that are ready to represent you, on retainer, or whatever. Spousal attorneys or ones in the immedate family do not count.

i have a family friend that's a lawyer but he's never dealt much in criminal defense. i do intend to talk with him next time i see him and see if he has any free advice on this subject, which will also serve a dual purpose of helping me determine if he's the type of lawyer i'd like to call if i ever had to use my weapon in self defense. my wife's uncle is also a lawyer and i think he has worked in the past as a defense lawyer, i usually only see him a couple times a year but after i pick their brains i'll add what they tell me to the ongoing FAQ that was previously linked.

just out of curiosity, when you say he "lost" you 27 million dollars... did you have 27 million dollars prior to meeting him and then no longer have that money afterwards, or did you lose a law suit (as a plaintiff) that could have potentially paid out 27 million in damages?

Me too. Smallest minority group there is: me. Minority of one. An individual.

Thats why I like individual rights. Groups don't have rights, every individual in the group has the same rights.

The one time I had a lawyer I lost all contact with my kids. Wasn't his fault, but I'd trade $27 million for another day in the park with my boys.

Ok. OK. My original post didn't give the whole story. I was just being cryptic and theoretically displaying dry wit. It was a jury award, which was not sustained on appeal. So I had it and then I didn't have it. Sort of the same concept as the rising and falling of the stock market.

And there is still more to the story, but it's ancient history. :leaving

Awww, and here I thought you hired a lawyer after you couldn't get the Nigerian Prince to send you the $27M he promised if you just paid the expenses! :biggrinjester:

So now I'm waiting for the same ruckus to erupt in Houston...
I think you'll be waiting a long time. Here's a picture of Council Member Jones.

I have a little card in my wallet, that when I call the number it mobilizes an attorney to get to you as fast as possible, ready, knowledgable on firearms and the Texas CHL law...Its cheaper in the long run to have one of these contracts, than to wait and find out how tolerable police investigators are if you are involved in a shooting incident, whether it was justified or not...

Don't give them (investigators) an excuse to figure it out that first night...

First of all, Ms. Jones is flaming hoooootttttt. Secondly, she is 100% right, and the Mayor and the Council members are a bunch of nincompoops.

More often than not it may, of course, not be best to have a close family member as your attorney, Sawdust, for reasons similar to those resulting in the advice often given with respect to doctors, but there may be some exceptions. I must caution that many attorneys would not agree with my saying there may be exceptions.

If one wants to have an attorney close at hand well up on handguns and handgun law, she can do what I have done -- raise one. ;-)

My son, an attorney, a trial lawyer, has his CHL, has attended Gunsite, lives nearby, and, I must admit, keeps up with handgun law better than I do. Does he have a lot of experience with defending in cases of intended self-defense by a CHL-holder? No, he has none, but I suspect there are not that many attorneys in Texas who do, just by looking at the scarcity of such cases cropping up and the scarcity of published appellate court decisions. I would suspect that any such case would be reported here on this forum, and, thank goodness, there appear to be just not that many, and even less with the defendant holding a CHL. Take that, anti-CHLers.

It might also be a less expensive defense, if you do not include the cost of getting him through the many years of schooling required before earning that law degree. Of course we do have what might be considered a retainer -- I am standing by should he need an attorney somewhat knowledgeable about handguns and handgun law. ;-)

While all this is at least somewhat in jest, it is true nonetheless, and we are comfortable with the arrangement, particularly as we exchange info on perhaps engaging another more-experienced attorney or expert witness(es), depending on the circumstances. These latter guys or gals can often make or break such a case.

This is a PS to my post just above.

I would not want there to be any misunderstanding. Neither I nor my son are trolling for business. I am firmly retired and he is my only prospective client. He is in a type of practice which would preclude him from taking such cases other than mine.

"rlol" i love getting those emails, there was a guy on another forum i frequent that got an email from a Russian "girl" claiming that she wanted to meet a successful American man to help her move to America. this guy strung the scammer on for about 2 months and posted the whole thing on the forum, it was hilarious.

It may be good advice but it could also be inconveniet and expensive.

I posted-

I don’t know if this is good advice for City Councilwoman Jolanda Jones to be handing out.

If an officer is investigating a crime and a person refuses to talk to the officer without an attorney present, the officer may take the person to the police station and hold them until they contact an attorney and have the attorney present. This would be a considerable inconvenience and expense if the officer just wanted to know what someone saw.

Unless of course Councilwoman Jones is willing to show up within a half hour at any time of the day or night and handle many of these things pro-bono.
God Bless America, and please hurry.
When I was young I knew all the answers. When I got older I started to realize I just hadn’t quite understood the questions.-Me
