Ahhhh, thats too cute...Go to the SPCA over near Washington St. and take a gander at the supply...I think they can hook you up with a good fit there...
I used to have a male weimaraner (95 lbs) to watch the house. Had to put him down in 2004. Broke our heart. The wife and I are not ready for another dog just yet. Actually the next canine companions will be two weims, both rescue dogs. The breed does better when they have a friend to wrassle with. Best watch dogs around. Smartest too.

We had a cocker male when the boys were small. Meanest little ball of fur you ever saw. I would hate to tangle with Chester.

what does that have to do with keeping your weapons stash private? i prefer that my neighbors and some of their random scummy friends not know i have weapons in my house.
Sorry, I should have commented further.

I posted it in response to what you said because it's a new campaign urging parents to talk to the parents of their children's friends about whether or not they have guns in the house.

I meant to draw a link between a national campaign imploring busybodies to ask private questions of their neighbors and the current attitude toward guns versus a person's right to privacy.

I didn't pick you out of the crowd, I had just seen a commercial on television for this campaign and it was fresh in my mind...

However, I will say that I wouldn't mind my neighbors knowing I own guns, just as long as they know that I will use them! Seriously, they can be reasonably certain you own other semi-expensive, easy to fence, easily stolen items, what difference does it make whether or not they know you own guns?

That "ask" campaign has been going on for a few years...

This is the first time I have noticed it pop up on a forum like this...Not that that is a bad thing...I think its good to know what PR stunts the Anti's are working on...

As far as open carry...Most here know I would like the option to do so if I felt like it...But I present that statement knowing (for years) the advantages, and the disadvantages to that method of carry...

In my home it is never more than arms reach from me...If I am in the yard doing some work...Lets just say its not too far either...

i had no clue what you were inferring through the link. my kids are 2 and 3. they both know that they DO NOT touch the trigger of a firearm and my 3 year old yells at me when i'm cleaning them. i've had the barrel and slide laid out on the table and she reminds me to point it away from everyone.

my kids also know that they are free to handle my guns when i'm around, but they are not allowed to touch them when i'm gone. yes they are very young, but i think kids are smarter than we give them credit for. having been taught early on, i think my kids will make good decisions should they ever encounter weapons at someone else's home; that's my responsibility as a parent. my responsibility does not lie with relying on someone else to make sure they put their guns up when my kids come over.

i've worked a lot of residential burglaries. i've also seen guns recovered that were family heirlooms or expensive collector pieces that had to be destroyed because the serial numbers were filed off. guns bring a pretty penny in the underworld and can easily be traded off for dope. guns will get you a lot more than say a TV or DVD player.

For the same reason I do not have NRA or IDPA bumper or windshield stickers on my truck. At home I always have a shotgun "at hand" but I do not openly carry simply because I do not want anyone to know that there are firearms present.

Observation

Post by anygunanywhere »

Some of the illogical reasoning heard/read regarding firearms and other issues:

"Fannypacks scream guns!"
I have used them when traveling - never had a gun in it. If this was true, then everyone wearing a Hawiian shirt would have a gun.

"Never carry a gun in a purse."
Purse is aceptable way to pack. At least the woman is packing.

"I do not have any NRA stickers on my truck/car/home."
I have NRA stickers on my truck, garage walls, etc. I have stickers on all my doors telling intruders we are armed. Come on in and let's dance. You had better find easier pickings!

"Open carry is dangerous. You are giving away the element of surprise."
Yes, open carry is dangerous. For the bad guys.

"I do not want anyone to know I have guns."
I do. So what if they know. Two things happen. Either they avoid me because I am armed, which is fine, or they warm up to me because I am armed, which is fine too.

We firearms owners are treated like the plague. We are the oddity. Strange. Are there not hundreds of millions of firearms in the USA? The few hundred thousand or so CHL do not own the hundreds of millions of firearms. Why be shy and hide what you do?

I am who I am. I am the same person with or without a firearm. I have the same convictions, beliefs, likes, dislikes with or without my firearms. Either you like me or you don't. Either you agree with my lifestyle or you don't. If the bad guys know you are armed, they will, more than likely, seek out someone else. If you are in a neighborhood where you are concerned about others knowing you are armed, move. Or, change your attitude. Be proud of who you are, arm yourself, be confident, and let the world know you will not be a victim. Install a monitored alarm. Involve your good neighbors and form a neighborhood watch,. Arm your wif eand children.

Your life is in your hands.

I have to agree with Chris. Too many people assume that they will be at home when the BG comes to steal your guns. Most residential burgs happen during the day when people are at work.

Most burgs I've worked, the actor is usually a friend of a friend kind of deal, and knew what was in the house.

That being said, I have an IDPA and NRA sticker on my truck and I clean my guns in my garage with the door open in the evenings.

Reason for No Stickers on Car

#27

Post by Studduck »

Cause I don't want the guns stolen. I cannot take firearms to my office so they must remain in the truck. If I were looking to steal one, I would bet on the car having an advertising sticker as being the one to break into first.

I think that your point was more along the lines of what I was trying to imply...I didn't help the situation by not commenting.

I only meant to point out that people who are anti gun somehow think that merely having guns in the house suddenly endangers everyone in the vicinity and that by keeping your children away from gun owners your children are safer.

along the same lines...why not ask your neighbors about household chemicals left out?
unsecured power tools?
prescription or illegal drugs?
alcohol?

My thinking is that like Chris said earlier, the better route would be to educate your children. Why rely on the protection (or lack of) from your neighbors, your children have brains. Teach them to use it.

I agree that children are given no credit for their intelligence. Not so long ago children were valued for their contribution to the family, now kids are too often looked at as liabilities.

As far as letting people know you have guns, I have both a NRA and a TSRA sticker on my pickup, I want potential thieves, robbers and other criminals to know that I will fight back. As far as my house is concerned everyone who enters my house knows I'm armed...but the only people in my house are family and close friends.

You are making my point. My home is not impenetrable. My firearms not in use are in a safe. However, I have other valuables in my home in the open (art, other stuff). If some big bad man wants to try and tote the safe away, have at it. Same for the other stuff. It is insured replacement cost. I too clean my firearms in the garage. I have my handgun on my hip when I fetch my paper in the morning or put the trash out. When the illegal solicitor rings my doorbell and interrupts my supper, the conversation is much shorter when I tell them to leave because they are trespassing as they eye the Kimber in condition one. I do not hide my ability to defend myself.

Your statement that the "friend of a friend" or some other aquaintance is often the burglar is correct. There are shady characters on both sides of the family, more so on the wife's side. They do know, and understand, what will happen if they cross the line. I believe that those who are not up front, open, and clear about where they stand on self defense and protection of property and life are the ones who are more likely to be deprived of their life and property.
