Lubbock CHL Instructors - Any recommendations?

#1

Post by olkev »

I was looking at the DPS list of instructors in the Lubbock County area. Pretty simple, plain, straight-forward list; not much info otherwise.

Anybody have any recommendations for instructors & classes?

I believe forum member "troglodyte" is in that general area. I took the instructor course with him this summer. Good guy.

The South Plains College Criminal Justice Department runs a "One Stop Shop" That will do your photos, fingerprints, course time, and Rangework all together. They will let you rent a Glock for the Range as well. You may want to contact them, I believe, at their Levelland campus.

I took the class several weeks ago from Mike (troglodyte). His website is http://www.talonchl.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. He has usually monthly classes, though I don't think anything will be happening in December with the holidays. It's a one-day course that lasts 11-12 hours. He doesn't include ammo, fingerprints, or photos, but his course is only $65 for class and qualifying. It was a good course, and I did my passport photos at Walgreens and my FAST digital fingerprints through L-1 for $10. Not bad for a shade under $85 + state fees.

Call Outfitters Supply in Brownfield, they can put you in touch with the instructor who teaches there. He Lives near Ropesville and may be willing to do a private class. I can't recommend him enough, He's a very good instructor. Additionally I would suggest contacting Patriot arms, I know their class is a bit more expensive but they may also have a class scheduled in the near future.

The number for outfitters is (806) 637-3144.

Pardon my ignorance but could you give me some more details regarding what "L-1" is?

Texas DPS is now only accepting electronic fingerprints, and a company called L-1 / FAST is doing all of the prints in Texas for this service.

If you do your application to DPS online, once you pay, it will 'pass you over' to L-1 /FAST to schedule your fingerprints, so it will show you all of the various locations and the times available.

L-1 Identity Solution in Lubbock is located behind Texas Land and Cattle on S Loop and Indiana (73rd Street). You have to apply for your license before you can schedule an appointment, and the browser will automatically take you through it after you submit your online app.

while I am not questioning you on this, when my wife got her CHL in June, they told her she had to do L1, even though we already had the ink copies..

DPS has been, and still are accepting rolled prints from us. Who are "they"? If "they" is an instructor, then that probably means he wasn't qualified to do rolled prints, and was 'suggesting' that you use the L-1 service.

AND, from the instructor's newsletter published by DPS...
Subject to the adoption by the Public Safety Commission of amendments to the Department’s administrative rules, beginning on March 1, 2011, Concealed Handgun Licensing will no longer accept hand rolled, ink fingerprint cards. After the adoption of this rule, all applicants will have to submit fingerprints electronically through L1 Identity Solutions.

"They" was the DPS website, once she paid online, it printed off her task list (whatever it is called) and on it showed L-1 for prints and as stated, the DPS site connected her directly to the scheduling site of L-1.
As far as the prints, the same Sheriff that did mine, did hers, and mine were valid, so hers should very well have been as well.

This is neither here nor there, if March is the date, thats good enough for me

Yes, the DPS website pushes L-1, and directs you to their site. But they are still accepting rolled prints until March. I included in my post above the notice in the instructor's newsletter announcing the change.

OK - One more question - I'm sure applying online speeds up the process . . .

Is it better to apply online to DPS before the class or after or does it matter?

Doesn't matter before/after. Online might speed up application by a day or two (over paper application), but most likely doesn't make a big difference, either. Mainly a difference due to USPS service. (DPS might disagree with the last part, but that's our experience.)
