Flying to MIami tomorrow, driving back

#1

Post by T3hK1w1 »

My father and I will be flying continental to Miami, staying a few days, and then driving back along I10. We both have CHLs, and my dad would like to bring his revolver. I'm aware of the general rules regarding flying/guns but have never tried it-any tips/tricks? We don't have a secure enough gun case yet, and I'll be going shopping for one this afternoon-not sure where to look for a good one.

Also, are there any state laws/policies that we will specifically have to be wary of? I know Florida requires the CCW be in the glove box. I'm a bit worried about LA specifically-do they really confiscate your CCW in a traffic stop if you can't produce a receipt?

I'm sure this has all been covered already, but this trip is rather sudden and I don't have time to look it all up in detail.

I have had no problems with my trip to Montana via airline. Just follow the rules and let them know ahead of time your transporting. :thumbs2:

I don't think that is right. That only applies if you don't have a CHL.

Don't know for sure, but it sounds like wives tales to me.

Receipt for what? I can't imagine that Louisiana law assumes that it has jurisdiction over the issuance of Texas CHLs.

Following the link I posted above will take you eventually to the Florida Concealed Carry Law: http://flsenate.gov/Statutes/index.cfm? ... 06#0790.06.

Nowhere is a glove box mentioned in the law.

That link will also direct you to the Louisiana CCW law: http://www.legis.state.la.us/lss/lss.asp?doc=97451.

Nowhere does the word "receipt" appear in the text.

Well, it seems we won't be taking a CCW after all, as I was unable to find a halfway decent pistol case at any of the 4 stores I went to. The best one I found could have been opened in 3 minutes or less by your average 12 year old girl. Of the rest, I could have pried any of them far enough open with my bare hands to remove a gun. :mad5
Very frustrating.

it'll be in your checked luggage. you retain the key. the rest of the time, you are carrying it. heck, you could use the plastic box your pistol came in, and throw a master lock on it.

believe me, a stolen handgun is the last of your worries when traveling by plane.

I agree that any case will do for a handgun. It will be inside a suitcase and locked. If someone is going to take it they will have more than enough time to bust into any case you can buy because they will take the case with them and open it later.

I print the relevant laws and places off limits for each state I will visit to carry with me. It helps pass the time on a plane to become familiar with the laws and such. http://www.handgunlaw.us/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is a good.

Have a good trip.

I fly every few months and almost always carry (only where TX CHL is not valid do I leave it at home). I too agree that http://www.handgunlaw.us/ is an excellent resource, check out their "Travel Links" and "Travel Links 2" areas for updated airline information. Any type of Pelican type case is secure for both airline use, but also to secure at a destination hotel and/or around children. Try http://www.caseclub.com/pelican-case-1120.htm as an example. The cases have foam interiors that can be custom fit for your "EDC" to include: weapon, magazines, knife and small box (20-25 rounds) of factory SD ammo. I worked for the airlines for 15+ years and have never had an issue pre/post 9/11. Travel safe AND protected! Good luck.

I think he is referring to a receipt for his weapon, not his CHL.
