Re: HLSR
It does not change anything. The event is not school sponsored, even if school groups attend.
There are some who feel that the clause about school sponsored events only applies to places the school owns and has the authority to control anyway. After much thought and debate, I have come to agree. I don't think the law could ever apply to make a place like the zoo off limits simply because a school group happened to be there on a field trip. There is no way the CHL would know, so it makes no sense to assume it applies. Therefore, it must only apply to places the school can control, like the fields around the school or the football stadium that is not on a campus. It can be argued it applies to anyone that is accompanying the school students on the trip, but even that is debatable.

Re: HLSR
gotcha....I have often wondered how the FFA or 4H involvement would compare to say, UIL involvement in football, baseball, etc.

Re: HLSR
FFA is usually associated with a particular school, but 4H is (IMHO) completely independent of the local schools (at least that was the case fifty or so years ago when I participated).
Re: HLSR
Steve's post is spot-on IMO. Just being somewhere and a school group showing up doesn't suddenly make it off-limits. The part I always look at though, is if you are participating in the event (planned participation like chaperoning, not just get caught up in it) then you would not be legal carrying. However, that is very gray, but i would err on the side of caution in these type circumstances. A good example would be attending a band competition at an auditorium where you sent only to see your kid play in their school band.

Re: HLSR
Larry you are correct on both counts. And 4-H is actually administered by the USDA as part of CSREES(Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service), which in turn is administered by the Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M Agricultural Extension Service.LarryH wrote:FFA is usually associated with a particular school, but 4H is (IMHO) completely independent of the local schools (at least that was the case fifty or so years ago when I participated).
FFA is chartered by the U.S. Congress, and comes under the auspices of the Dept. of Education, and trickles down to state then local educational systems.

Re: HLSR
I was out at the rodeo this weekend March 13, 2010 and knowing how the normally have the metal detectors and pat downs at other sporting events, left my gun in a lock box in my truck. Feeling quite naked I went in through the Blue lot entrance.
Observations:
There were no signs, or pat downs. Just checked my ticket and let us in. Same thing at the Reliant Arean and Center. The Corral Club had the basic "unlicensed possession" sign....
At the Reliant stadium, no signs or pat downs either?
I too was under the "professional sporting event" restriction so I was a good boy. For what it is worth I spotted a older guy, in a 5.11 vest and he was packing heavy from the bulges on both sides, outside the Stadium area and he might have been retired LEO but pretty sure he wasn't a current LEO. The Areana and Center both have pro sporting events during the day in them so I was all around surprised at the lack of signs or security.
Everyone had their pocket knives cliped to their jeans too.

Just a few notes...
Was at the stock show on Saturday for the sheep dog trial. No one ever checked my bag upon entering the Stock Show area, no metal detectors, either.
I believe the Reliant complex is owned by the Harris County Sports Authority-possibly it is joint managed with City of Houston, but the 2 jurisdictions generally don't play well with others with regard to maintaining/operating properties/facilities.
School groups such as FFA are big exhibitors but not the only ones. You will also see private ranches showing their animals-they often have the fancy set-up areas with the ranch name/logos.

Re: HLSR
Went yesterday to the HSLR. The plastic hasn't arrived yet so I didn't have to worry about carrying inside or not. We actually took my wife's truck instead of mine because we were gonna have 6 people instead of 5 coming back home. I almost grabbed the pistol hidden in my truck and moved it over but decided that I really wouldn't need it.
That turned out to be somewhat fortunate since the truck was broken into in the parking lot! (Yellow Lot). I came back out to the truck in the evening and one of the side doors wasn't closed. Everyone started blaming each other for not closing it. Opened the front door and the stuff from the glove box and console were all over the floor and seat.
The pulled out and found the Canon AE-1, some of my Oakley's, iPod accessories, and stuff. But they left that all on the seats and floor. It doesn't appear that they took anything. After inspection I found that the drivers door had something shoved through the handle and broken so they could just open it up. I guess they were looking for easy stuff like purses and things like that. But it appears that they took nothing. Had I moved the pistol they would have probably taken that. I don't have a good hiding place setup for it in the wife's car yet. I'll have to work on that!

This is more common than you might think at the HSLR and has been for years.phrogg wrote:

A word of caution at any event like this. Once you park and leave your vehicle, pay very close attention if you "forget something etc." and have to return to the vehicle. The crooks might be in the middle of breaking in and a single woman or man not paying attention could walk into a bad situation. Parking lots are a crime Mecca anyway so be alert and obvious that you are not a good victim.
When you do have to leave it behind, bolt in a safe: Not absolute but will slow down the snatch n grab.

Yes, the two lessons to learn here. The best place for your weapon is on your person. But if you have to leave it in the vehicle then you need a secure place to keep it. I'm thinking I'll order up a couple of these from Cabela's. http://bit.ly/dneWC0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Cheap enough that I can put one in each vehicle. And at the same time that will also help with the requirements to keep the guns from the kids. All my kids come shoot with me so I'm not worried, but since they are all teens I still need to have it more secured. Or just keep it on my belt!!!

barres wrote:The concert is during the rodeo in the rodeo arena. They are not separate events. You could argue that you got to the event after the rodeo events were over and were there only for the concert, but the ticket is for the two combined, so there would be no way to prove it. You cannot buy a ticket for the concert only or for the rodeo only. Legally, I believe you'd be up that well known creek without a paddle. I am, however, not a lawyer, so do not take my position on this as legal advice.
Depending on the time you enter the grounds YOU CAN PROVE IT. Your ticket should have gotten scanned upon entry to the entire complex as well as entry to the outside events. If you didn't enter until just prior to the concert it would be on electronic record. Although it would likely take a subpoena after a ride downtown to get that proof.

Re: HLSR
Phrogg, just a thought check out http://www.center-of-mass.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they sell the same thing but I think you can get them a little cheaper. FYI... the foam inside these have a bad odor to them. You can wash them in the washing machine on the gentle cycle than put them in the dryer for about 15 minutes should fix the problem.phrogg wrote:Yes, the two lessons to learn here.
