Best Austin-area CHL class

#1

Post by Snake Doctor »

Looking to get a large group of my friends certified. I took my course in 2005 and enjoyed my instructor, but thought I'd ask what other people thought of theirs--in the Austin/Travis county area, that is. Anything helps.

My wife and I have used Mr. Joslin for years. Both CHL and renewal.

Thanks for the info. Anyone have an opinion on Ross Bransford's class (http://www.chl-texas.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)? It was recommended by a friend, though he has only used him one time.

I have taken Ross's class, and enjoyed it. I would take it again from him in the future.

:iagree:

I took Ross's class and it not only teaches you about CHL and TX law, it teaches you about things like "Old Texas" Law and gives you some really interesting perspectives on how things used to be done and in some places, still are. It also includes the stuff on conflict resolution and parent vs. adult mindset.

My wife is considering taking her class from "A texas girls guns", We bought a Kimber from them and my wife felt really comfortable with the owners.

I took my original class from Ross Bransford at what was then "Cook's Sure Shot" range, and is now Red's North. Good class, knowledgeable instructor, but the Pflugerville cop he had do prints wasn't very good - I had to get them redone at DPS. (One advantage of living near Austin is you can take your completed packet in, and have them look it over before you leave. Nobody there in the office thought the prints would pass muster.)

Did my renewal with Tom Schaefer. Down-to-earth as an instructor, not so good at taking prints. Let his kid try to sell stuff to us. Class lasted several hours longer than it should have for a renewal.

Latest renewal was this summer with Austin Regional Firearms Academy. Here's my review:

Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

I've taken three CHL classes from Ross Bransford and can recommend him. Good classroom teacher and safe range instructor. Spends enough time on the topics, but doesn't drag out the class. Schedules plenty of classes, so it was pretty easy to work him into my calendar. I took the last class at the Lone Star range near Lockhart. It's a decent facility and a nice drive from Austin.

Another recommendation for Ross & Dottie. I took my initial class from them, and my father just took a renewal.

Took my first with Ross and plan on going back when it comes time for renewal. Maybe I'll show up for the whole thing just so I can hear him tell stories again :)
