Texas CHL Remains Valid for New Mexico Resident

#1

Post by KenLor2 »

I recently moved to NM and spent considerable time researching if my Texas CHL remained valid once my residency changed. The Texas DPS website indicated that I "may" have to turn in my Texas CHL if my residency changed. This left me in limbo since there are several issues including residency, change of address, and reciprocity. Here is the final outcome:

At the suggestion of a Texas DPS contact, I requested and received a Texas ID card while visiting in Austin. This ID card indicates my NM address. At the same time, I had my Texas CHL address updated to the NM address. Both Texas and NM DPS folks seem to be OK with this approach. The NM DPS contact wrote me via email this was OK but that I probably should renew my CHL in NM once the Texas CHL approaches expiration. If something changes, I will let the forum know.

That's great. I thought residency would have trumped out-of-state CHL. I'd keep all the documentation in case it ever comes into question.
