Would she come to a low-commitment ladies' pistol league? The one I'm in meets at Red's on Wednesday nights, alternating north and south. So she'd only be looking at an hour or two every other week, or less if she didn't want to go every time. They'll teach her the basics, and usually there are classes afterward (we're on break for the summer). They've been things like how to clean a gun, fundamentals of shooting, defensive mindset, intro to shooting sports, etc. Membership is free and gets her half-price lane fees and free rentals. A lot of the ladies have CHLs, and most will have the mindset you're hoping she'll develop. Maybe it would rub off? We have some great instructors, and our sponsors often offer weekend training classes exclusively for this group of ladies, so it has sort of a "girls' day out" feel to it.Redneck_Buddha wrote:I am walking a fine line with my wife, who feels like she is swamped with too many other tasks than to spend the soon-to-be four hours in a CHL class and learn to shoot. I walk around in something of an emotional heck every day because she seems very complacent about her personal safety and doesn't place a high priority on it. She is ordinarily vigilant on constitutional and other important matters, but she is lulled into a false sense of security because we live in "low-risk" Austin.

That might actually sound a note with her, MB. I'll run it by her after we get back from holiday in a few weeks.MotherBear wrote:Would she come to a low-commitment ladies' pistol league? She still wants the XD 9 in the gun safe with a round chambered when I travel. As soon as I break in the new shotgun that will be ready under the bed as well. We go through the mindset drill every time I leave town.

If you look on Facebook, you should be able to find the Austin Sure Shots and they'll have the dates and locations of upcoming practices. Here's what they have on the Red's page: http://www.redsguns.com/sureshots.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; We get a wide range of ages, backgrounds, experience levels, etc. I've always found the group to be very welcoming and encouraging, and the staff treat us well. I like shooting in any case, but it's more fun when I can make a girls' night of it. Hope she'll join us!Redneck_Buddha wrote:That might actually sound a note with her, MB. I would share with her as many incidents of crime events occurring in low risk areas. This is what I'm dealing with also. I have friends, male and female that are complacent. We don't live in a safety bubble. That mom that got beat up in front of her child recently, never dreamed she would be a victim of home invasion. It's happening more and more often. You are so right to stay on her about this topic.Redneck_Buddha wrote:I am walking a fine line with my wife, who feels like she is swamped with too many other tasks than to spend the soon-to-be four hours in a CHL class and learn to shoot. This one raised the hair on the back of my neck because it was so close to home. He came from Alaska! He drove from Dallas airport through Fort Worth looking for a small town. His plan was to rob the bank or kidnap a woman at an atm! So if you think they don't travel, from their neighborhoods in town to yours, you're leaving yourself vulnerable.

Keep showing her the crime blog. You can pull up sheriff reports and mapquest it to show her how close it is.
If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?
