Ankle Holster

#1

Post by Sigirl »

Have any of ya'll tried an ankle holster? I haven't yet, and I don't want to carry a tiny gun to wear one. I carry a Sig 239, and I'm not sure if they even make an ankle holster for it. If you've tried one, what do you think about it?

I currently carry in my "Coronado" gun purse, I watch it like a hawk and it never leaves my shoulder when I'm out in public, but I'm tired of always carrying my purse. I'm just not going to change the way I dress to carry on my hip either. I wear boot cut jeans so if I can find an ankle holster for my gun I think this would be a great solution for me.

GALCO has a line called "Ankle Gloves" that may have one for your carry piece...

Don Hume as well...

That P239 looks like it might be too big, but then again you should at least try it and wear it around the house before venturing out...

I bought a G27 from a member here a year or so ago...He had an ankle rig for it, and I tried it out...My only beef with it was it would have taken me too long to draw and use the weapon in a defensive situation...

Wearing it around I was ok though...

But then again the G27 is a sub-compact pistol frame...

The Sig P239 to me is a mid-sized model...

Can you tell us why a belt rig is not something that floats your boat???

But I'd go check out those makers and see if they have something for you to work on the ankle for that size of pistol...

Greetings--

I have an ankle holster that I used with my G26 (sub-compact). Its a Don Hume with a thigh strap. I found it to be comfortable. It held the pistol well. The two issues I had with it were:
I noticed that because of the extra weight and the slight bulge, I was walking with a bit of a limp. G/F noticed it. I kept wearing it for a couple of week to see if I got used to it-- Nope.

I also agree with others-- its way too hard to get to the pistol. As I practiced-- I noticed that I didn't bend as well as I once did

An ankle holster may be an answer for occasional concealment, but IMO its not a good every day carry rig. I put it in the closet. I carry with a CTAC slide now.

Sigirl - I also have a Sig P239. I totally understand about not wanting to change the way you dress. Jason bought me a CompTac Pro Undercover holster. I do not carry on my hip - I don't need any extra help there! I "appendix" carry on the right hand side. It is IWB, and with my normal attire (jeans and such), it is not too terrible. I believe it has a reverse cant. Jason keeps telling me that carrying a gun will never be comfortable, only comforting, so I am slowly getting used to it.

The good people at CompTac were very helpful when he was trying to explain what I wanted and what was comfortable for me.

I know you are in the Houston area, (we live in Texas City) and would be glad to meet you somewhere and let you try it out if you are at all interested. Just let me know!

Have a great week!

Sigirl,
My wife has a P239 also. I think it would be too big/heavy for an ankle rig.

My wife uses a "belly band" and carries around 11:00 for cross draw with her right hand.

She also has an OWB holster she can use at 1:00(appendix carry).

The purse is #1 by far. The belly band, a distant 2nd. The OWB, never, since she got the belly band.

Whatever you do, DON'T LEAVE IT AT HOME!

Sigirl,

There's nothing wrong with a "tiny gun" if you can hit with it!

But if you still think there is, carry a "tiny gun" (sub-compact auto or up to about snubby revolver in size) in an ankle-holster as a backup gun instead of a primary.

By their nature, ankle-holsters are NOT appropriate for large-gun carry...too big and heavy. And unless you're wearing bell-bottoms, they print.

Unfortunately there aren't many options for carry for either sex, unless we are willing to change our style of dress. The biggest issue I have and many women tell me is vanity! We don't like to add anything or wear anything that makes us look fat. Our purses have become the best answer to that issue but they are NOT the best carry option for obvious reasons. I do carry a small gun, a KelTec 32. I have put a belt clip on it and can easily slide it in my waistband, pocket, purse, anywhere. I find the gun accurate and easy to shoot. It is also very light and does come in a 380.

I am learning to dress a little differently - baggier shirts. The other issue I have is what I call gun butt rub. I do not and will not wear undershirts in the summer and the IWB holsters all rub. I am working on a design to alleviate that.

I really don't want to change my style of dress either, but that's not due to any vanity issues, just other reasons. Still, I also must admit that I really am NOT into wearing Old-Man-Guayabera shirts -- never will wear those -- but I don't have to though, because ankle-carry has worked well for me (until recently as mentioned below).

One reason (among several) I like Open-Carry instead of Concealed-Carry is that for ME, an outside-the-belt holster is a much more comfortable way to carry something big/heavy like a 1911. Concealed, I carry a smaller gun, like my Beretta 21A Bobcat (.22LR) or the 3032 Tomcat (.32ACP)...usually in said ankle-holster.

I expect to be moving to a "Gold Star State" at some point in the future and will end up getting that state's CHL (maybe), but in the beginning I'll be OC-ing.

Recently, my usual ankle-holster carry wasn't an option due to lower back problems acting up again...I couldn't bend down to get the gun because of LOTS of disabling pain, so I just carried it in my jacket pocket...no problem with that, however, since these two guns are Pocket-Pistols (sub-compacts) anyway. And if I'm on my motorcycle, pocket-carry is preferred.

When my back gets better, it's ankle-carry again.

Until Texas gets OC -- I hope the TCDL can help bring that about -- anything bigger than these guns, such as my 1911, stays in the safe.

A while back CompVest said something I totally agree with. She said something like a woman's carry is like pairs of shoes. You can't have just one. You need the options to go with your apparel.

That's Galco's AG296 Ankle Glove. Probably the best and most comfortable ankle holster out there. The sheepskin lining lets it breathe behind the holster to eliminate any perspiration problems. There is an Ankle Glove Calf Strap available for anyone that wants to add some support from the upper calf area of the leg but it's not normally necessary.

Kimberly,

After "Carrying" that baby girl around for the last 8 months (1 more to go), a gun won't seem like anything.
