OC Pepper Spray

#1

Post by dolanp »

Hi all,

I wanted to order my wife some OC pepper spray. She is a student and part-time RA/TA at a university and sometimes has night classes. Even if she didn't, I'd still feel better if she had some protection. She's not about to carry a gun, I'm afraid. It's not that she's against them or anything, but she just wouldn't be keen on the idea of carrying one and having that responsibility all the time. Anyhow, I've heard that Fox Labs makes some good OC sprays and I was wondering what brands or sites you folks might recommend. I was thinking of getting one of these for her. What do you guys think?

All the LEOs that I know recommend buying your OC spray from a police supply store. Buy the same stuff the police use, some of the "keychain" sprays are of limited utility. You should know that OC has a limited range and if sprayed indoors or into the wind you'll gas yourself. I would recommend buying two cans one to test spray and practice with and one to carry.

If you or your wife has to use the OC remember, the effect is only temporary and you should get out of Dodge pronto.

Yep, Fox has a good reputation.

Over time the cannisters of any of 'em can lose propellant. The good ones will have expiration date printed and readily visible. I've seen a few on shelves for sale where expiration date had already passed!

Another "caution" is to look into rules and regs. for specific university. Some may actually inhibit/prohibit as "dangerous weapons" or some such ---------. Your wife might even be able to more "legally" carry a pistola in car on campus than to have OC in a classroom ... "The large print giveth and the small print taketh away."

I could not get the link on "keychain" to load. But if it is the Kubaton that has the little OC insert and semi-resembles a little maglight, I know a guy  who's daughter is equipped with one and carries it daily on an unnamed campus with some of the aforementioned unsavory rules.

One thing to be aware of . . . rules are not necessarily the same as LAWS. Breaking a LAW can get you a criminal record - not good. But unless the force of LAW is behind it, the worst that breaking a RULE will get you is some sort of administrative penalty. Now, in a school, this could mean expulsion or dismissal, but if you keep your wits about you, nobody will EVER know you have the pepper spray unless you NEED it.

And most administrators will run and hide rather than assert a woman ought to have submitted to an assault rather than spray the bad guy.

My advice? Well, I'd never advocate breaking a LAW in a public forum . . . but I was never one for strictly observing mere RULES.

When you buy pepper spray
buy two of them

Then take one to the back yard, the back 40, or someone's parking lot and
try one out.

It's not the same as formal training but
you will learn how to operate it
what it sprays like (mist or stream)
how many seconds it will spray
and
what it smells like
See you at the range

The Key and Palm Defenders work great. I let the last OC class here use mine, and it was effective. ;)

They also sell inert inserts so you can train w/o the actual OC.

I also recommend that you buy the Fox brand OC.

Where did you get the FOX stuff???

The only place I have seen, and granted I may not have looked far beyond that place...But I know of only one place within about 15-20 minutes of our area that carries (but does not sell to civilians) the FOX brand OC "keychain" repellent dispensers...

At the time they looked to be a good buy...About $11 a pop...

I wanted to buy one each for my Mom (anti-gun), my sister (who could give a flip), and my Wife Unit (who would shoot first, then reload and spray later, all hands free of course since she is also a Blue Toother, see yesterdays thread, thanks "jimlongley" )...

+1 on http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com

I got the Fox 5.3 with the flip top. This helps to protect the "trigger" from being accidentally pressed.

I'm looking anew at this stuff...What also caught my eye (pardon the pun) was those "nuetralizer" handwipes they sell that help you get cleaned up if the stuff gets on you...

Bet our L.E.O. friends carry some of that stuff in the trunks...

Hello everyone,

I'd like to put in my suggestion for another OC product: Avenger 10% OC Ballistic Streamer. You can by the stuff at http://www.peppergas.com .

Stay safe...

I carried the small Fox Labs OC when I was on duty, but in plain clothes. I wore a Miska clip from comp-tac. Worked out pretty well. The one time I needed it, I wasn't wearing it.
