In the range test, if a shot is touching the line between two scoring areas, does it count as the higher or the lower?

I had a practice round last night with the same target as the test, and I had 3 touching lines, so it made me wonder. I shot the equivalent of either a 247 or a 244.

(edit: Removed "Instructors:" from the subject because I realized that other people who took the test have had some on the line and can answer.)

Anything touching the line will get the higher score.

I shot a lot of .22 as a kid, 20-25 years ago. Then nothing until about a year ago when I put 50 rounds through my Colt Commander .45. Last week I shot 100 rounds, and last night these 50. So apparently the test is too easy.

My father (CHL for several years) said he thought they scored higher on the line, but he wasn't sure.

I'm signed up with CHL-Texas next week. And as a side note, I found out that I can drop off my application at Building I at the DPS complex within a few miles of where I work. I'm hoping that will shave a couple of days off the process.

It's a general rule in almost all shooting that "best edge" scoring applies. One exception is really precise benchrest rimfire shooting, which uses "worst edge" scoring.

I guess I'm just mean spirited but I won't award the higher score for "touching the line". The line must be "cut" and I'll use a scoring plug or a cartridge if I can't determine the cut with a MK I eyeball.

OK, here's the target. How would you score me? Assuming none missed the target entirely.

Looks like a 247.

The one on the line between the 7 and 8 zone at about 5:30 is 5 points, as I count it in the 8 zone. Same with the one at 2:00.

The one on the line between the 7 and no number zone at about 7:00 I count in the 7 zone, and is worth 4 points.

Do CHL instructors even score a target like this with a numbered score? It is clear that he passed and I thought that a score was not recorded. Just wondering....nice shooting.

It depends. If the student wants his score, sure. My records and the form to the state shows Pass/Fail only.

Thanks all. My father said in his class & renewal, the instructor had them swap targets with a classmate for scoring.

And if you get a 250, of course you want to know the score! But you'd know that as soon as you saw it.

I really thought I would do better than 230, but it was the first time I had shot a self loader, first time to shoot DAO and as I fired the 40th shot,I let my left thumb creep a bit high and the slide folded 1/2 the thumb nail back to the root.
Last 10 rounds I had trouble seeing the front sight, lost my concentration as I kept watching the blood run down over my hand.
I really prefer revolvers, they do not bite you!

Tell you what though, you LEARN where to properly place your hands/fingers after a case of "Slide Bite" that draws blood.

My CHL class instructor had an interesting take on this issue. He gave us a Pass or Fail, but no scores and no take home targets. Said something like "You don't want any records of how well you shoot floating around if you are ever involved in an actual shooting." Seemed to make sense at the time, and more so the longer I thought about it..
