First week of carry with my new CHL

#1

Post by TexasGuy »

Well, since I don't have any carry size handgun, now carry Beretta 92FS. It is a bit heavy. Also, since I don't have a holster for it, I put it in my pocket. Not the most convenient carry.

So far all I can say about the new experience is that it is weird to be around in places that you have been so many times now with a gun on you. Feels like you are visiting these places for the first time. I noticed that I try to look more at the faces to judge any possible reaction as if all eyes are on me. Also, as other have stated, it is a bit strange to be near police armed. I still frequently check if it is hidden well, maybe too often. Another trait I noticed, I forget to look for the 30.06 sign when I enter places. Nevertheless, I am learning.

Dude, if I was carrying a duty sized pistol in my pocket I would worry about being "made" too. You must have deep pockets.

Try a sporting goods store and find you a cheap (respectable) holster until you find one you REALLY want. Then you can quit looking at peoples faces and look to see if they're carrying.

Congratulations on your plastic!!! :cheers2:

Pretty soon you will carry and not think twice about it. The only time I really remember is right when I get out of the car (shirt tug), and if I see something that takes me from a mellow yellow to concentrated urine color.

Hmm, before these days will come, seems like I will have to spend 1K for new handgun and accessories. Then maybe even more than that. :totap:

Why, what happened to your Beretta?

Beretta is fine, I carry it. I meant by saying investing 1K into a proper carry gun, holster and any accessories.

One of my carry pieces is a Baretta 96 which has the same size frame as the Baretta 92. I use a DeSantis holster specifically designed for the Baretta. About $75 including post & handling charge. Conceals well...of course you need a GOOD belt.

Picked up a new Gen4 Glock 27 with mag extensions and a Tuck This II holster from De Santis this morning and was out the door at GT Dist (Austin) for just a tick under $500. Now having said that, it would have been real easy to go over $1000 too.

I stopped into GT Dist for the first time Friday afternoon. Great store. Just wish I was eligible to buy a Glock there. Any idea where I could find a G23 Gen4 in the Austin area?

Even if finances are an issue right now, just a good belt will help A LOT with carrying. But I would recommend getting a holster ASAP, even a cheap nylon holster like an Uncle Mikes.

That said, innovative solution to your problem. :tiphat:

Dangerous holster.

When I was new to concealed carry, I wore a DeSantis "Tuck This" holster that has the same adjustable cant mechanism. That adjustable cant mechanism is not robust enough, and will eventually loosen or fail (it only takes one screw to loosen). When that happens, you can find the front of your pistol rotating down into your pants. I had it drop my gun down the front of my pants. Since that time, I have heard of many others on internet forums sharing the same problem with this holster.

I am also aware of reading at least one case where the guy went to grab at his handgun as it was rotating around and then falling down his pants. He apparently grabbed enough of the trigger through his pants, caused a negligent discharge, and shot himself.

Run away from this holster.
