IDPA Membership?

If someone only wants to participate in club practices and club matches does that person need to purchase a IDPA membership? I see where it only cost $40 for a one year membership but would rather not be out the $40 if for some reason I didn't enjoy the experience.

Technically, you can shoot one match before you're required to join the national IDPA organization. There is no requirement to be a member of the local club, but most will discount match fees if you are.

In practice, the clubs I've seen aren't very strict on this rule. I know I shot several matches before I officially joined IDPA.

As mentioned, the IDPA rulebook says you can compete in 1 match before joining IDPA. As also mentioned, some clubs are kinda soft on this rule.

As long as repeat non-IDPA shooters are not scored, it doesn't bother me that they come out and shoot. But if you shoot a few matches and plan to keep shooting the local IDPA match you really should pay the $40 and join up. And trust me, as long as you are a safe shooter and follow the Safety Officer's commands -you will enjoy it and want to keep shooting

Now, some clubs/ranges hold shoots that are "IDPA-similar," but that are not held under the auspices of the IDPA. So you'll want to check what you're shooting. If the club is shooting unsanctioned, ad hoc matches, no biggie.

But if you shoot IDPA matches, even if the club is lenient, IMHO you should join the IDPA. It's the right thing to do; it keeps the club compliant with IDPA rules; and it promotes the shooting sports.

I shot at both times of locations. Plus it really is worth it in my opinion.
