Educate me, please....

Post by BDB55 »

We took our CHL early April, sent our packages in and the checks have been cashed by DPS. I've read a number of posts here and understand we must recieve a PIN number in order to check our status online. Does the DPS mail the PIN number to you or do you have to request a PIN number? And by the way....the "waiting" is the hardest part! Thanks in advance for anyone who can eduacte me.

Welcome to the forum.

If you send in a paper application without applying online, DPS will automatically mail you a PIN.

The latest information is that the PIN arrives about six weeks after DPS receives your application.

(You get the PIN immediately when you apply online.)

You get your CHL quicker if you don't check the status online.

Or maybe it just feels that way. "rlol"

Don't get too excited about checking the online status... it becomes an obsession and once it gets to 'Processing Application" it just seems to get stuck there for freakin ever! As of tomorrow, mine will have been showing as 'Processing Application' for exactly 60 days now which means I have probably checked it well over 100 times and it just always says the same stupid thing... :totap:
Harris County (no issues w/paperwork)
02/08/09 CHL class
02/12/09 paperwork received
03/09/09 PIN & 'Processing Application'
06/26/09 BC finally returned (Day 134)
07/05/09 Application Completed - license issued or certificate active (Day 143)
07/10/09 plastic in hand (Day 149 from rececipt)

There's no point checking the site more than once per business day, because it's not updated in a timely manner. Also, even when it says "license issued," you've got a week or two to wait for fabrication and mailing.

When you apply online, you get you PIN with the paper work that they mail you. Here is what the top of the form looks like and you can see where they tell you your pin:

It *IS* on the top of the form that you return to them. I made PDF copies of the form.
