Is the backlog increasing or decreasing?

What is the current "official" time line from DPS on wait times you guys are hearing? Everytime I had called DPS, they were always quick to tell me that they are experiencing a 40% increase in applications over 2007. However, the very last time I called before I received my license they told me that they are now experiencing a 51% increase in applications over last year. That would indicate that the backlog is increasing, and applications are pouring in at a faster rate. Are you guys hearing the same thing?

My brother in law still has not submitted his application (he took class in May) and I'm trying to estimate if he will be getting his license before the end of this year or not.

Not if he doesn't submit the application! "rlol"

Seriously, I believe it is true the rate of applicants is increasing, so I don't doubt they are 51% ahead of last year. The Heller case, this being an election year, and other things have caused all those who have been just "thinking about it" to finally make the leap and do it.

But, I also think the DPS has finally taken steps to improve processing times, so the backlog has not increased at the same rate. Hopefully, as we get into fall, the applicant rate will decrease, as it seasonally does, and DPS will finally catch up to it.

With the current hiring of 20 more temps I thought that the backlog would be decreasing. However, during my last call I was surprised to hear that they are now stating a 51% increase in application, versus the 40% they were saying when I first started calling in. Has anyone else been told this 51% number, or are they still telling you 40%. What about total days. Originally I was told applications where taking between 90-120 days, but one poster has said that they are telling him 120-150 days.

Linda, since he has not submitted his application yet, I may actually talk him in to taking one of your Utah courses. The Texas CHL application fee costs the same as taking your Utah Course, plus the Utah CFP fee. Plus, he would get his license in 2 months instead of 3-4 months. When is your next class?

earlier this week "Steve" told me that they were experiencing the 51% increase in applications for a new license, and they are running 120-150 days.

it certainly sounds as if the Steves are reading from a cue card or script.

I wouldn't put any faith in the actual things they tell you because it's clearly boiler-plate information and not applicable to your particular application. Many applications are taking far less than 120 days and some are more than 150 days. Maybe they do have a 51% increase in new applications but they also have a large increase in staff to handle it.
