Some additional information on Harris County applications.

2-12-2009 -- my application was received by DPS in Austin; it had been over-nighted by USPS. (This should be considered calendar day 1 in the process.)

2-20-2009 -- my check was cashed by DPS. (calendar day 8)

3-19-2009 -- a letter was issued by DPS containing my PIN. (calendar day 35 of the process)

April, 2009 -- all quiet except for the innocuous wording on the DPS website: in process. (calendar day 77 of the process)

May, 2009 -- all continued quiet; the innocuous wording continued on the website. (calendar 108 days have now passed)

June, 2009 -- the eery silence continues; wording remains same: in process. (calendar 138 days into the process)

7-1-2009 -- sent letter of inquiry requesting assistance to State Rep ELLEN COHEN (calendar 139 days of process)

also,

7-1-=2009 -- sent letter of inquiry requesting assistance to State Senator RODNEY ELLIS (calendar 139 days of process)

7-10-2009 -- received a letter from State Senator RODNEY ELLIS; a nonsensical response which DID NOT respond to my letter but was full of political rhetoric dealing with his issues. HE HAS LOST MT VOTE. (calendar 148 days into process)

It is interesting to note, however, that State Rep ELLEN COHEN has never responded in any manner. SHE, TOO, HAS LOST MY VOTE.

7-23-2009 -- website notice changes at mid-day to read: : "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active". (calendar 161 days into the process)

7-24-2009 -- CH License placed in mail. (calendar 162 days and counting)

7-27-2009 -- License received. Total 165 calendar days.

Of the 165 days, there were 2 national holidays plus multiple weekends which should be deleated in final consideration and counting.

Thanks to everyone on here who has shared experiences and frustrations. It has made the journey bearable.

Just posted this in the "January Applications" forum:

Here was my timeline.

Note: I did not have to re-submit ANYTHING and have a perfectly CLEAN record. Not even a speeding ticket since the mid-90s.

Location: Harris County
01/17/09: CHL Class Taken
01/23/09: Packet Mailed (Certified)
01/27/09: Packet Received by DPS
02/25/09: Received Pin Number
02/25/09: Application Processing
05/01/09: Called CHL Div. @ DPS - "Waiting for local background check"
06/01/09: Called CHL Div. @ DPS - "Still waiting for local background check"
06/15/09: Called CHL Div. @ DPS - "Local Background Check Received"
07/15/09: Called CHL Div. @ DPS - "Sent To Be Printed"
07/22/09: "Application Completed - License Issued or Certificate Active"
07/25/09: License in hand!!!

Approximately 180 days since they received my packet I finally received my license.

Hello all!

Checking in..

Day 156 today. No issues with paperwork. I called DPS and was told BG checks come back in the order that they were received. This is simply not true.
In any case I’m happy for all the folks finally getting the phantom plastic. I have not written my congressman or senator or anything like that, maybe I should have.
I think if i was told “Harris county BG's are a cluster f..k and that they come back when they do, there is no orderly system" then I would feel better. At least I know it’s the truth.

I'm not really mad at DPS because I know they really are swamped, although I believe the Harris County BG check system could be more efficient.
Let’s hope the next Texas Legislator session fixes some of the inefficiencies for all the Texas citizens who submit apps in the future.
Until then, patiently waiting.....

After reading some of the above posts I'm not feeling too bad at 133 days today. Especially since they required a do-over on the photos. Just checked again and a young fellow named Daryl told me my app went out for BC on June 4. Told him I'd check back in about a month  He did tell me someone somewhere is trying to get it changed to allow civilian employees to run background checks. Now they, as you all know are run by commissioned LEOs. And there is 1 that takes care of Harris and Galveston Counties. Plus the folks in the surrounding counties who work in Harris County. Anyway, congratulations to all that have received their plastic. I'll just keep packin' around the house getting ready for my Wally World walk.

This has been done. It takes effect September 1st under the sunset provisions of this legislative session.
