I will expect your reply by close of business today.
I can't speak for others, but mine took 98 days from the time DPS got my completed packet to process background checks in 2 counties and all paperwork. No problems with fingerprints, photos, or paperwork.

Quicker response than I expected, and I have to give Mrs. Brummet credit, she is taking this one personal.

Dear Ms. xxxxxxxxxxx:
The increase of applications has prompted the Department to work
on a plan of action. Your application is waiting on the required
background investigation to be completed. You have not been denied, so
there will be no need to start the process over. That part of the law
that you are referring to pertains to criminal files requiring
additional documentation or processing. I have requested that your
information be forwarded to my attention, once I receive the complete
application I will contact you. Thank you for your continued patience.

FAX 512-424-7284

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I miss quoted the 90 days its actually 60 days kind of
Bellow is the Statute
It states that the Department has 60 days to issue or reject or request more time
if they do not do the above 3 within 30 days after the 60th day then its is denied.

However, I think we now have a good bit of "Written Proof" that it is not an auto denial.

411.177
(b) The department shall, not later than the 60th day after the date
of the receipt by the director's designee of the completed application
materials
:
(1) issue the license;
(2) notify the applicant in writing that the application was denied:
(A) on the grounds that the applicant failed to qualify under the
criteria listed in Section 411.172;
(B) based on the affidavit of the director's designee submitted
to the department under Section 411.176(b); or
(C) based on the affidavit of the qualified handgun instructor
submitted to the department under Section 411.189(c); or
(3) notify the applicant in writing that the department is unable to
make a determination regarding the issuance or denial of a license to
the applicant within the 60-day period prescribed by this subsection
and include in that notification an explanation of the reason for the
inability and an estimation of the amount of time the department will
need to make the determination.

(c) Failure of the department to issue or deny a license for a period
of more than 30 days after the department is required to act under
Subsection (b) constitutes denial.

still waiting. 123 days since DPS first received my info. I had to redo photos. Day 78 since processing application was back on the DPS site after photos were resubmitted. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Sent a few emails to DPS. Still waiting on background check was the excuse. I haven't received a reply from my latest email. I asked if they were still waiting on background check and if so which county. Both seem to be slow as of late, Bexar/Harris county

Starting to come to light...
They don't have enough commissioned LEO's...

Just want to let you know that I have sent a e-mail to the Department of
Public Safety asking someone to please check the status of your
application and to give me a call. Just to let you know. DPS was
beginning to see a slow-down about a month ago and for some unknown
reason they are once again seeing a large spike in new applications. The
problem is the security clearance. A commissioned officer is the only
one that can run a background check.
I will let you know as soon as I
get a call-back.

It is just getting a little frustrating. Having grown in MD I got used to a 2 week waiting period to buy a handgun. Now that I am in TX it is hard to figure out why I can buy a gun and get approved in 10 minutes but have to wait over 100 days now to get a CHL. I took the class the last week of January and got my PIN a few weeks later......."Processing"......

Called 'em up again and was told that the application was "sent over to printing." I asked several times what exactly that meant and finally determined that it was the license. Once it is printed, it is then approved. I was told to call back in a couple of weeks. :smilelol5: Still processing, but at least they finally got all the background checks done. We'll see... :yawn
Registered online - received PIN around end of Dec.
Class Fri./Sat. 1-17/18-09

2-12-09 - Process App! - No delays as of 5/20/09

IF I recall correctly, I remember reading through the sunset bill (Yes, I Actually read through the ENTIRE thing, albeit at a breakneck speed to just see what overall went through) something precisely about this...

I recall something being in that bill that will now allow STAFFERS, and not just Commissioned LEO's, but under the authority of Commissioned LEO's, to do the background checks for CHL's.
I'm going to have to read through it all again now and see if I can find it again, but if it did make it, that should SERIOUSLY help on the BG check speeds.

Charles, can you confirm if this did, in fact, make it to the 'final' passed version of the bill?

Yes! I Found it! This is from the enrolled version of the Sunset Bill.

The new text added by the bill is Bolded and underlined
SECTION 11.05.  Section 411.176, Government Code, is amended to read as follows:

Sec. 411.176.  REVIEW OF APPLICATION MATERIALS. (a) On receipt of [the] application materials by the department at its Austin headquarters, the department shall conduct the appropriate criminal history record check of the applicant through its computerized criminal history system. Not later than the 30th day after the date the department receives the application materials, the department shall forward the materials to the director's designee in the geographical area of the applicant's residence so that the designee may conduct the investigation described by Subsection (b). For purposes of this section, the director's designee may be a noncommissioned employee of the department.

(b)  The director's designee as needed shall conduct an additional criminal history record check of the applicant and an investigation of the applicant's local official records to verify the accuracy of the application materials. The director's designee may access any records necessary for purposes of this subsection.
...
So this means, as of September 1st, BG Checks for CHL's have no excuse for taking so long anymore! :)

Has anybody ever got any help or any expediency by contacting them. I have not called or e-mailed them but I am starting to get fed up, it has been roughly 15 weeks or more since I received my PIN (which was almost 4 weeks after I mailed the packet), I am at a total of almost 150 days since I mailed the packet.

No, but you can hear what they have to say about it.. I've called 4 or 5 times and its always a different answer like "it's printing" or "they are finalizing it you should have it in 1-2 weeks" but that was over a month ago. Give them a call and see what they have to say about yours. Have your application number ready to give them when they ask.

What determines how long it takes? I 've never been convicted of anything but failure to obey a traffic sign.
