Waiting on my plastic

#1

Post by packinginpost »

I have been waiting on my plastic since March 18th. Numerous calls and emails to the DPS has got me no where. I was contacted by my State Rep on Friday and he said he was going to call on my behalf. He calls me today and says they were printing my license as we spoke. :hurry: I am so happy that it may finally be over. I sure do appreciat having a gun friendly State Rep who actually cares.

Hopefully soon I can give my seat to a newbie, because it is real warm :mad5

You make me wanna call mine too. The only thing that is stopping me is that I have lived in 3 states in the past 11 years, so not sure that is why the background checks is taking forever. They received the package March 2nd and on May I sent some stuff that they finally decided to tell me was missing. Nothing ever since.

Well i don't know where you live or who your Rep would be, but what could it hurt to inform them. I don't care if you have lived in 10 states, it shouldn't take so lond. The system has problems when people from March are still waiting on their plastic and people from April, May, June and July are getting theirs. Seems like it should be a first come first serve system to me. Ok I will get off my soap box now. :rules:

Be aware, that even after printing you may still be in for another 2-3 weeks. DPS has now resorted to pre-printing your license due to long wait times at the 3rd partry printing service they use. Once it is printed, it then has some additional processing to do that takes up to 2 weeks (they wouldn't tell me what it was when I asked them, they just said the group it was in took up to 2 weeks to finish), and then it is sent to the mail room, which could take up to 7 days before being mailed. You may find that your license is printed, stuck in an envelope waiting for someone to double check it before it is mailed out. I noticed that on the paper stock that held my envelope, someone had initialed it.

So if I had to guess, based on my conversations with DPS and what I have seen

1. Background checks are sent off
2. Some time later (I'm guessing after they receive the first background check and it is okay) DPS sends of to have your license printed in preparation of other checks being recieved
3. DPS waits for all outstanding background checks to be received
4. DPS waits for license to be recieved from printer
5. License is sent to a final group that reviews it before it is sent out. The license can take up to 2 weeks while in this stage
6. Person pulls license/application from stack, reviews information on license, places license in card stock, and initials card stock
7. License is then sent to mail room. It can take up to 7 days for mailroom to actually mail out envelope. (mailroom is shared by many departments)

BigBlueDodge,
I think you are right on target, spoke to someone at DPS today and got "everything has been approved now it moves to final processing" We had a discussion about what "final processing" was and it seemed to be long and somewhat complicated (some data entry, checking, mail, etc.). There was also the issue of when that particular license finally gets to the top of the stack.

I am 84 days in since they recieved my application. Been told like 20 differnet stories from all the checks are done-its at imaging-back to waiting on background checks.

They didnt touch my apllication for 62 days which is crazy. I have only lived in one county here in the USA. I went through 6 months of background checks with the FBI and scotland yard when they issued my Visa 2 years ago and then a whole heap more of back ground checks when they issues my green card last christmas. So I dont understand what the issue is here. I spoke with DPS today and he said that the chance of me getting my plastic inside of 120 days was slim !!!! When questioned about why others are getting approved that sent in there app after me he just told me that thats they way these things go.

At this point i had to end the conversation as this was madness.

yeah, I saw the "application completed, certificate active" on the DPS website last Friday (the 15th). I hadn't checked it in a couple of weeks so I was REALLY excited.

Now it's the 22nd and I still don't have my plastic...

The 3 month wait wasn't as bad as this last week.
5/21 took the CHL class.
5/23 mailed the packet in.
6/22 hadn't received packet or PIN, requested via email from DPS
7/08 changed addresses. Notified DPS, re-requested PIN
7/08 received PIN
7/25 still "Processing Application"
8/15 application approved... waiting on plastic.
