I renewed my license in October, approximately 87 days before expiration. I received a confirmation email the following day.
I have called and spoke to three different people on the phone; each one reminds me to wait up 45 days to renew. I offer to them that I have waited about 100 days since I renewed online.
They dig a little deeper and tell me that it is still in the "fingerprints under review" stage. After a few calls and four weeks, I get a call back from a supervisor (she did not give her title and I forgot to ask), who tells me that my license... is still in the "fingerprints under review" stage.
Is there anyone we can talk to about this that is higher up the chain?
Did they get someone higher up above supervisor & if not what did they (supervisor) say when you asked? What did the person above supervisor say if they did get someone?

Yes, you can call your state senator's office.
That usually gets the license kicked out in a hurry.

I'd put money on the fact that your are a victim of their "IT issue" as I am. I called 3 times yesterday before I got a straight answer. Essentially this "IT issue" means they lost your fingerprints in the database; your prints didn't get attached to your application properly. It takes WEEKS to fix I've been told, and they have to submit the issue to their processing department for it to be fixed. if they didn't notify of this I would call back asap and ride them to get this straightened out. I have no come across about 20 new applicants that received confirmation up to 20+ days after me and already have their plastic. They told me this "IT issue" was rare but I don't think it's a rare as they'd like us to believe.

After reading the OP message logged on to the website and I do not have the ability posted yet to renew. My wife will be taking her course in March to get her first license and thought about sending mine in for renewal about the same time. My DL also will expire this year.
6 months. At the 6 month point, they will send you a renewal notice and you're good to go. You do not HAVE to wait for the notice, but 6 months is the earliest you can renew.
Looks like I screwed up too.
Sent the renewal a month ago and mine will expire in about two weeks.
Never thought there were a reason for it to take so long.
Pretty sure my last renewal went quickly so I wasn't all that concerned.
It's going to make me feel naked for a while until it comes in.
What I can't understand is why it takes so long when everything was all good before, should be just academic , IMO?

So far I have not talked to anyone higher than the supervisor. The only thing anyone from Austin has told me is that they are "waiting on the FBI to clear the fingerprints." I plan to call again today after lunch time.

Thanks Pawpaw for the advice, I'll send them a note or give them a phone call and update when I hear something.

I renewed online in October.
I called today and they said that the fingerprints were released today. The rep. on the phone said she did not know how much longer after this point. I did not ask what were the next steps. I'll update when the license is in hand.

I applied for renewal on-line on December 12, and received my license February 10.
I renewed online on Dec 5 2015. I sent email with no response and also called. Finally got thru and they said someone looked at my renewal on Feb 17, 2016 (which is a Sunday by the way) they work Sundays? They said they are waiting for background check to be completed and that they have no timetable for backgrounds to be completed. I been expired since the 2nd of January, and like the rest of you I am very perplexed. The timetable in the statue means nothing. We are at the mercy of a regulatory service. They can do what they want and there is noting you can do about it.
Kind of scary to see these renewals taking so long. I got my initial plastic about a year ago and I was actually surprised how quickly it came. I think this is probably just incompetence/govt. bureaucracy but if the wrong group had an agenda you are really at their mercy - or lack thereof. Keep us posted guys. We’ll all be in your shoes sooner or later.
I'm thinking maybe that's why they send renewal notice so much in advance. My wife got her renewal notice last month. (Jan.) Hers expires in July. We did the online renewal right away. They do send you have a receipt online which I printed out at the time. So when you get your renewal notice send it in right away. Mine is due next year.
After reading all of these posts regarding the extended wait times for renewal I'm getting nervous. Mine isn't due for another 18 months but I'll have to renew extra early. Not to hijack the thread, but why can't the DPS process LTC where they do DL? Then they could update photos, fingerprints if necessary, and provide you with a paper copy showing that the renewal is in progress.
On line may be more convenient for most of us, but it would at least give us a second option.
