Always wear a hat!!!
I was at the Bullet Trap today shooting my XD9 and trying out my new Bersa .380 CC. I had made a conscious decision to not wear a hat, even knowing that I should. I won't make that mistake again.
Everything was going fine, until one of the .380's casings ejected, ricocheted off the lane partition, then fell between my safety glasses and my face. It settled below and to the right of my right eye, at the top of my cheek. The sensation of "oh, that's warm" quickly turned into "AGHHH, THAT'S HOT!!!".
I got it out within 2 seconds, but it left a burn. A hat will now be part of my standard safety equipment when visiting the range, no ifs, ands, or buts.
Any creative cover story ideas for what I can tell people at work on Monday if anybody asks what happened?

Your wife/girl friend used her curling iron to make a point.Any creative cover story ideas for what I can tell people at work on Monday if anybody asks what happened?
You were working on a high tech laser device and a mirror was misaligned.
The LED $ display on the gas pump over heated and exploded when you were filling up.
You were practicing Torch Juggling. You need more practice.

The same thing happened to me a while back with a .45 cartridge. I had a hat on, and it settled between the temple on my safety glasses and my skin. Left a mark for about 10 days. I feel your pain.

In pure disdain for the oil companies you were dropping new 454 crate motor in your ride, when you got tagged with a water pump bolt as you were shoehorning it in.
Doing a triple gainer off the high board you touched the corner.
After the BG tried to poke you with that cue stick, you.........

You could just tell the truth?
Actually happened to my friend, a brazing rod broke as he was using it overhead and it landed on his cheek.

While fending off the demon hoard with your trusty chainsaw-arm, you got grazed. thankfully it wasn't lethal, or you'd be fighting with the deadites right now....
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Re: Always wear a hat!!!
My son and I were shooting my AR in the rifle tube at Bass Pro, getting a 100 yard zero on the scope. My son was on the rifle, and I was standing off to the side and back a few feet. He fired, and the ejected case went right down the front of my t-sirt and burned my belly button.
If you think an ejected .380 case is hot, you should try a freshly ejected .223 case!
No hat in the world would have prevented that one, and I couldn't come up with a lie to cover it because my son was a witness, and he lives to bust my chops. Besides, the true story is funny, and I enjoy a funny story as much as the next guy, and I don't mind being the object of the joke.

I sure would like to, but I've learned from other people's accounts of work experiences on this forum to keep my gunnin' to myself at work.jimlongley wrote:You could just tell the truth?
Actually nobody has asked about it yet. I guess a little bit of extra ugly isn't too noticeable.

Re: Always wear a hat!!!
I shot an M16 on full auto about a month ago and had about 5 cases went down the back of my shirt, and yes I got some burn blisters, even when ya got cases burning you you gotta keep a hot gun pointed down range while other hand is trying to pull on back of shirt to let cases out
It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them

Re: Always wear a hat!!!
I was shooting the CHL test and a couple of my .45 brasses when down my sons shirt, to my right shooting during the test.......he shot my target off on the edge causing me to score 245......couldn't believe I had missed that far.....found out when I got home at the end of the day...
The lesson is give your son a hat and a collared shirt if you are going to shoot with him.
The Whole story to follow:

Re: Always wear a hat!!!
Since we are telling brass stories...
I once took a .22LR casing directly in my ear canal, I know... I know... I should have been wearing ear protection , on initial impact it did not fully "chamber" but in my haste to remove it I managed to push it all the way in to the rim. I had a nice blister all the way around my ear canal and then a scab in my ear for about a week.
Bottom line: Always wear a hat, eye and ear protection.
