Negligent Discharge at Houston Gun show this weekend

I was at the Geo. R. Brown center today and we had a ND at the show. Anyone know what exactly happened? I heard second and third hand stories and possibly a first hand. But a guy shot himself in the arm apparently thinking his gun was unloaded. One story even suggested that he didn't even know how to unload it. He ejected the round in the chamber BEFORE taking the loaded magazine out and then took the magazine out and wound up pulling the trigger putting a round in his arm.

Another story said he lied to the police and said he didn't even have a gun and then later reached into his pocket to get something else and set it off.

Anyone else know anything more?

I was there also. Certainly an attention getter!

I heard similar stories and saw the guy getting treated near the exit as I left -- srrounded by HPD officers and a paramedic or two.

I guess stupidity exists everywhere! All kinds of signs were posted about "No loaded weapons" and I thought that everyone bringing a weapon inside was supposed to be checked by a LEO. Of course, I suppose one could sneak one in without much difficulty. Nobody asked me anything as I walked in.

Certainly puts a damper on the weekend...

But being shot accidentally or not, deserves to be surrounded by scores of HPD...While you are being treated at the scene...

I hope the guy who got shot ends up being ok...Thats the big thing to me...And that everyone else remembers to be safe and check the weapon before entering...

If I bring one in, it will already be unloaded, and the action zip tied back...

But thats just what I do...

I'm not in town for this one, but I had a friend that went today. He heard it not too far away from the booth he's at. He went to duck and cover real fast. Something you don't see very often a gun show. It was a Chinese man btw. He was bleeding real bad from his hands. Cops tried to cuff him, but the bleeding got worst.

I guess his gun safety skills is not all there. This is a lesson learned for the day that "All Guns are Loaded Guns..."

I'll bet not only he learned a lesson but many others had a
refresher coarce also. We all make mistakes but this sounds
like a case of overdose carelessness or plain out stupidy.

Some people don't need to own guns. Just think about all the idiots on the road that can't properly operate a car. You get the idea.

I'd state, instead, that some people need some rather thoroughly intensive training with regards to firearms handling, and to be held strictly responsible for any harm or damages they cause through mishandling.

I would not deny a firearm to anyone legally eligible to own it, not even if they're foolish in their weapons handling. If they endanger me with their foolishness, they stand a good chance getting a rather personal look at Mr. Blasty, but I'd not deny anyone the means of self defense. Even fools get attacked/mugged/beaten/raped/etc, just like the rest of us.

The guy who shot himself needs to be held legally responsible; his injuries should be paid for out of his own pocket, not insurance or anything else. Any other damages to persons or property likewise need to be paid for from his pocket. And he needs to have the point hammered home that if he shoots someone else by mistake, they may shoot back.

Please put my name down on the list of 'whiners' about 30.06 signs at gun shows.

The George R Brown is publicly owned. After Senate Bill 501, 30.06 signs are not enforcable. It doens't mater if it's a gun show or a quilting show.

As stupid as that news report is......"forgot the gun was loaded" is so irrelevant and shows the mans ignorance or disregard of firearms safety rules about always pointing the gun in a safe location, the gun is ALWAYS loaded, etc.

That kind of statement (forgot the gun was loaded) is what fuels the anti-gunners!!! The news article could have stated that the man failed to practice the basic firearms safety rules but of course it didn't.

News media have no problems stating "she failed to be wearing her seat belt" or "he failed to have his life vest one".........putting the blame more squarely on the person. But when it comes to firearms they act all stupid and ignorant like it was the "guns fault"!!!!!

I thought the reports I've seen were generally fair. They made it real clear no innocents were hurt. Quoting the guy is fair, and its pretty obvious to anyone that the guy wasn't practicing safety well. I haven't noticed anyone in the media blaming the gun. While some could claim it was over reported the incident was in a very public place with lots of witnesses. It deserved to be reported. We might not like it, but not every gun toter is a genius.

My position is that the TX CHL training should include a segment on gun safety, including handling and administrative tasks (with practicals). I'd also like to see some minimal marksmanship guidance. I agree with Thane that even the stupid deserve the right of protection. I just think we should make a minimal effort at alleviating some of that stupidity in the CHL course.
