Hi-Point 9MM Carbine

#1

Post by Abraham »

They're seriously ugly, but if they're reliable/accurate I'm interested.

They're quite inexpensive, low recoil, and the 9MM ammo is what I use in my Glock 19, so I keep lots of 9MM on hand. The other plus is 9MM is easily available and relatively cheap.

Anyone here know much about/own one?

If so, what're your thoughts?

Thanks!

I've wanted one of these for a long time, I actually almost bought one this past Saturday (great price on one at a pawn shop in Waco)...but the whole 10 round magazine always brings me back to my senses. Very cool guns, ugly but cool. I just wish Hi Point would make a double stack version or at least an extended magazine that worked.

Why not build a 9mm AR?

Parts are readily available. In fact, I've seen completed 9mm uppers with magazine on the PSA website recently.

I have one of these. i bought it used pre '08 run-up. it has an ATI stock on it that makes it look like a Beretta 9mm carbine. sooo much better looking.
Total ball to shoot. a whole lot of fun.
I never clean mine. never. i don't really take care of it. I bought it to be a beater plinker and it functions well that way. I feed it all kinds of dirty (lead) reloads and it just keeps running. they aren't terribly accurate (even when clean...) but still fun.
with the price of 22LR these days, my reloads are almost as cheap to shoot.
my main gripe is that they use a single stack 10 rd mag. it would really great if they ran the glock mags like some of the kel-teks. i know some extended mags can be had, but they are long and ugly and some question their reliability. Oh, my mags don't drop free either when doing a mag change, too much friction. I suppose i could work the mag well or something but i never bothered. maybe that is due to my ATI stock, now that I think about it....

their customer support seems pretty good. my rifle came w/ a red dot and i wanted irons, the rear was missing. I wrote them and asked how much.... they just sent me one straight away w/o even asking (I had my address in the email). FREE! awesome in my book.

I have one also and :iagree: with everything y5e06 said.

They are very crudely built, but a rather ingenious design. The trigger is horrible. It's made of plastic and about as crisp as squeezing a grape.

For the price, it's hard to beat. It goes bang every time and comes with a lifetime warranty. That's the lifetime of the gun, not just the first owner. If you buy a used one, the warranty is still in effect.

Oh one more thing... With that textured plastic (OEM) stock against my cheek, it stings when fired. It's not from recoil, per se. It's the vibration of the stock. A little moleskin on the stock would probably fix that.

ETA: Disassembly for cleaning is a real pain. You're far better off just blowing some Gun Scrubber through the ejection port and dragging a boresnake through the barrel. Luckily, that's good enough for this thing.

You might consider a Marlin camp 9 mm (also made in 40 and 45 cal) , I like wood stocks but they make several 'tactical' neoprene black stocks for them in different styles . Comes tapped for a scope , they came with a 10 round mag but the mag interchanges with the S&W 59 pistol so you can get up to at least a 30 round mag .

I have owned one for several years and never had any problems at all , we rarely go to the range without taking it . Have a 10 , 15 and 20 round mags . Marlin quit making them in 1998 but parts are still available . Very nice little carbine .

Original stock .

With aftermarket stock .

They're nice. They're also 4-5x the price of the gun he was asking about.

I did not put the two guns up to encourage him to bid on them ,only as examples of the carbine looked like . If you notice no one has bid on either of them because they have too high a starting bid . You can look around and find a better deal .

Why not just get a 9mm upper to mate to your existing AR lower?

You'd end up with something like this:

TAM,

That's an intriguing idea.

Thanks.

So, what are the further considerations to doing that?

Gotta buy magazines (not a problem) and reset zero (again, not a problem) every time I oscillate back to 5.56 upper?

What else, if anything, do I need to consider if I go this route?

And, thanks again.

I really appreciate it!
