CT shooting - Pepper Spray? Taser?

#1

Post by AustinBoy »

I am all for allowing trained individuals to carry concealed weapons in our schools. That said....

I havent seen any media or anyone on here even mention pepper spray or a taser.

The media reports the principal was shot lunging at the shooter. This tells me she was within 15 feet of the shooter.

What if she had pepper spray? a taser?

She may have still died but the shooter would now be incapacitated in some way giving the next person a real chance at tackling him and preventing further death.

For the time being, wouldnt pepper spray or a taser be better than NOTHING?

I buy pepper spray in bulk and hand it out to any guest that comes to my house and doesnt have it.

I would be more than happy to donate a couple of cases to my local schools.

Thoughts?

My concerns are how limited of an area of exposure both of those items need to be effective and, as you stated, distance. If a potential suspect is wearing bulky clothing then a Taser is absolutely useless. And, if you don't pepper spray them correctly you will not incapacitate them (again, dealing with area of effectiveness). They are both excellent tools and I carry them if I am unable to have a firearm. That being said, I am not very sure they would have been effective in the CT shooting (based on very limited knowledge, so correct me if I'm wrong). But, as much as I hate to admit it, "something" is better than "nothing".

If necessary, I would engage with a handgun a shooter using an AR-15 ... but with a little can of consumer-grade pepper spray or consumer-level electro-shok weapon? Honestly, I think throwing my 230-pound body at the shooter might be more effective.

I am trying to find something that can be done NOW. Right now. Guns in schools will take a long time if ever to get approved.

The principal died throwing her body at the shooter.

Pepper spray or a taser MIGHT have been able to do at least SOMETHING.

Right?

Better than nothing?

Sure, better than nothing. If nothing else you have distracted him an extra 10 seconds and may save a life. But it won't be your own.

As long as it is "might" it could be almost anything.

Unexpected violence will be a good start. Ever have your wife/girlfriend get really, really, upset and start throwing things, dishes, clothes, irons, golf clubs, lamps, etc.? You have to use whatever you happen to have, as violent as possible, and hope it works out.

Not long ago I watched a video made by a former SEAL about handling an airplane hijacking, part of a series that ran on SPIKE a few years ago. Cade Courtley is his name. http://www.spike.com/full-episodes/435s ... n-1-ep-101. Extreme violence, speed and surprise are the SEALs stock in trade.

Of course, like Indiana Jones, it's easier to just pull a pistol and shoot the bad guy, if you can.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

locked doors, ubreakable security glass, and having to be "buzzed" in is the best bet. that's what they do in other countries where guns are banned. In most socialist democracies, even pepper spray and tasers are banned. Obama being a socialist, he probably salivates at the concept of making self-defense illegal like in other socialist democracies.

Pepper spray in a school could pose a risk to all the students. I've seen them go off accidentally, and there are people allergic to the ingredients in it. If you used it, you'd have to evacuate the school for a day. The taser isn't an option. Nobody ever said bring a can of pepper spray to a gun fight. I know it would seem like something is better than nothing, but try evacuating pepper sprayed kids. You can't combat lethal force with anything less than its equal.

I wouldn't bet my life on pepper spray. I have sprayed quite a few people, and it never seems to work on the whacked out people.
