Truck broken into.....gun stolen.

I am in Austin for the Texas Computer Educators Association state conference, and I am staying at the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott. I made the stupidest mistake ever last night. I left my gun in the seat console overnight. I always bring it in, but last night I guess I was just too tired or something. When I went out to get into my truck to go to the conference this morning, the passenger side front window was smashed in and the truck had been ransacked. The only thing missing was my XD-9 service model with 2 full magazines (32 bullets) and my 3 cell LED flashlight. They did not take the GPS ($600) or the $300 Leopold binoculars.

I called the Austin police. They took the information, but sent no one out. I called my insurance company and they hooked me up with a relatively close by glass company to do install the new window. Unfortunately, I have $500 deductible on glass so the $177 to put in the new window is on me.

I am glad they did not damage the truck beyond smashing the window. It is an expensive mistake though to forget to take my gun in. It is a lesson I will NEVER forget. My gun will be with me everywhere.

So now I am shopping for another gun when I get back to Mesquite tomorrow. I would like to stay with 9MM since I still have around 1000 rounds of ammo in that caliber. I am not sold on staying with an XD. Are there other manufacturers I should look at?

Sorry to hear this. Especially in Austin, since I live here.
Does your homeowner/car insurance cover the gun loss?

Now that you're rid of the XD, it's time to upgrade and get a Glock.

The car insurance only covers damage to the car. My homeowner's insurance will cover the stuff stolen for the amount above 1% of my home insurance amount, which would be $1300. So the stolen stuff would be covered only for the amount above $1300. I paid $450 for the XD and $35 for the flashlight. So I am not looking to get any insurance money to cover my losses.

If you're an NRA member, you're automatically covered up to $1,000 for loss of firearms. Here's how to file a claim: http://www.locktonrisk.com/nrains/armsc ... rocess.pdf.

Sorry to hear about your loss, when reading this I remembered that I left a revolver in the truck last nite.

A glock might be a good idea for your next gun, you won't have to worry about forgeting it in the car, they would leave it and take the binoculars.
Right LT.

I don't think I'd be a very happy camper...But its a hard lesson learned...

Not your fault "J"...Somebody else decided to smash and grab against you, and they got lucky...

Check, because I am not so sure, and I'm ok if I am wrong, but the TSRA may have a system like the NRA for losses if you are a member...

Man I am really sorry to hear that. Just a suggestion - I think it would be a good idea for you to get a copy of the Austin PD report re the theft to keep just in case something comes up later involving the gun.

Thanks! This is useful info. On the form, it says that:

"You must supply documentation, from your insurance company, which shows the amount paid for each firearm or accessory claimed. The amount of your deductible needs to be indicated."

So it would seem I need to put the firearms on my insurance policy or something? Does anybody have experience here and can comment?

Sorry to hear about your smashed window and gun getting stolen. Here's my idea for a replacement, though:
