As much as I can afford. It's a better investment than my 401k.

usually around 10-12 thousand rounds each of 9, 40, 44, 45, 38, and 357. 8k rounds of 223 & 7.62, a thousand rounds each of other rifle calibers (7mm, 300wm, 25-06, 30-30, 30-06, etc).

Of course, I'm an FFL and I sell it, does that count?:

I used to have a little over 5K rounds of 9mm, but times got tough and I sold most of it. 400rds of various 12ga. couple thousand 22lr. 400rds of 7.62nato. 50rds of 45acp. 90rds of .223, 400rds of 380, 1 rd of 40s&w that I must found at a range.

I just picked up my first .223 rifle and 45 pistol this weekend, so that's why I have so little of it.

Not sure if you are asking about our 'carry ammo' or total ammo we have on hand. I normally keep about 4-6 boxes, in each caliber, of self-defense ammo for our carry weapons--9MM, .40 S&W, .38, & .32. Add to that a few hundred home defense rounds for a couple of long guns. I have not counted how much range ammo we have for all of our firearms. My guess is over 10K rounds plus a few thousand bullets and more than enough powder and primer caps for my muzzle loaders. In addition, we have a few cases of shotgun shells in a variety of different loads.

Why? Because ammo prices keep going up and our 'investment' in ammo has out-performed my basic savings account. Lately I have tried to subscribe to the theory of buy two shot one.

I have "not enough", definitely.

Less than 1k of 223 and 45 (mostly FMJ for the range, about 1/3 is defense ammo), maybe 150 or less of 308, only a few 30-30.

My goal is about 5k 223 and 2-3k of 45, 1k 308, and maybe 200-300 30-30.

Unless I buy another gun and then, whoopee, here we go again!

Not nearly enough if the ship hits the sand. But, way more than some think is necessary. I buy some whenever I have a few extra bucks.

Me too. I try to keep one or two cases of range ammo on hand for each centerfire caliber plus a few hundred rounds of social ammo for my carry guns and AR. For 22 rimfire, I have close to 6000 rounds on hand, mostly bulk packs but around 1000 rounds of CCI MiniMag and SGB, and some subsonic and CB for pest control. I would like to have more but I'm not willing to go into debt for it.

I'm not hoarding. Except for the 22, it's only a 30 - 90 day supply. For example, I shot more than 300 rounds of 9mm this weekend in drills and that wasn't unusual.

That too.....if I had enough ducats.

I currently have about 400 rounds each of 9mm and .45 ACP, about 1,000 rounds of .223/5.56, and probably 300 rounds of .308/7.62. I've also got a case each of 20 and 12 gauge, and small quantities (say less than 150 rounds each) of .380 ACP, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and .44 Magnum. Finally about 1,500 rounds of .22LR.

Actually, for me the quantities for 9mm, .45, and .308/7.62 are lower than normal and I need to stock up. I'd also like to get at least another 1,000 rounds of 5.56 M855.

I don't have a par level for ammunition but at any given time you can find several hundred loaded rounds in my house a probably enough brass, bullets, and powder to load at least several hundred more. As for why, it is simple one can never have to much ammunition.
