"A Navy SEAL was fighting for his life late Thursday after accidentally shooting himself in the head while showing his gun collection to a woman he met at a San Diego bar.

The incident took place early Thursday morning at the SEAL's residence in Pacific Beach, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Cali said the man took out several firearms and, in an effort to prove they were safe when the woman asked him to put them away, held one to his head and pulled the trigger, thinking it wasn't loaded.

A navy spokesman confirmed that the sailor had completed his SEAL training last week and was assigned to a West Coast-based team this week"

I read this while astride the Porcelain Throne this morning. It almost ruined my concentration.

It makes me sad - for the young man, his family, the traumatized girl he'd met, etc.

It makes me angry - he is/was smart enough, focused enough, to survive SEAL training, the military invested all that time & money on him, he had a bright future, etc, and then he goes and does something this dumb? Makes me want him to survive so I can kick his butt. :grumble

I must be in a lousy-mood today. All I could think as I read it was that it saved the USN alot of money that they may have otherwise wasted on developing this brand-new SEAL.

What a waste. I feel bad for his family and friends and to think this stuff is 100% preventable...

Just another example of why guns and alcohol don't mix! Drinking at 2:00am with a woman he met at a bar. I wonder what his BAC was??? Not that it really matters at this point.

There is your answer. Alcohol makes people stupid. Nothing good ever happens past midnight. Combine those and you have a tragic result.

:iagree:

Having been a young military man once upon a time, I agree that alcohol can make you do stupid stuff. Luckily none of mine ever involved alcohol AND guns...as both you and texanron said, the two don't mix.

Another reminder of the young age and inexperience of those upon whom we heap such a huge responsibility
With bigger responsibility comes bigger consequences.

Prayers for the SEAL and his family.
A young, stupid mistake. We've all made them.

Along with the alcohol (if there was alcohol involved), this sounds like a case of somebody being *too* comfortable with his guns.
I've seen people who would say, "I've been around guns since I was 5 years old..." who are the worst with gun safety. They become too comfortable and stop respecting the possible danger. There is a "that doesn't happen to me, only other people" attitude that takes over.

Imagine this woman's reaction:
The serviceman, who had been drinking with a woman at a bar before they returned to his residence, . . .

The man offered to let his friend hold the weapon, ... When she declined, he tried to demonstrate how safe it was by putting it to his head and pulling the trigger.
Talk about a nightmare bar pickup . . . . I can hear her now: "No more getting drunk and going home with strangers. No more getting drunk and going home with strangers. No more getting drunk and . . . ."

Young men w/ testosterone + women + booze = quite a lot of foolishness.

Most live through it. Some do not.

With all due respect, there is no cure for stupid.

Read about this on another forum. Apparently this was a fresh 'graduate' from Seal training. A REALLY bad case of alcohol and firearms being a VERY bad mix. Prayers for the families. I'm sure the young lady won't be a fan of firearms in the future.

I'll tell you what's worse than that (aside from the obvious, of course). Its the immense amount of official manure that the rest of the SEAL trainees are going to have to endure because of this (as if they didn't go through enough already).
