How many rounds?

Post by Big Ben »

How many rounds do you carry in your gun?

The reason I ask is because I have a Glock 19 which has a 15 round capacity. I used to fill the mag and rack a round in the chamber then eject the mag and top it off. I have stopped doing this because it seems kind of tedious and when I unload my gun I always have an extra bullet floating around free that I cant stow in a mag because its already full.

Does anyone else practice topping off your mags or is it pointless to worry about 1 round when I still have 15 plus usually one or two spare mags on me anyways?

Generally speaking, I have always kept the mag full +1 in the pipe.

As a side note, It's good practice to rotate that one extra round through the mag
each time you remove it to avoid bullet setback.

WIth my P30, it was 15+1 and and extra 15rds for a total 31rds. With my new PX4, it was 13+1 plus 13rrd for a total 27rds. I ordered 3 17rds mags for the PX4 and now it is back to 13+1 plus 17 rds for a total of 31rds.

At night I do carry an extra Mag with my P30 so it would be 46rd.

I shoot IDPA so I unload before the each match (1 to 3 times a week) to load my gun with target ammo and conserve my more expensive sd ammo. As I shoot atleast 1 to 2 times a week I usually clean my gun on a weekly or biweekly basis at the very least. On average I have to unload my gun probably 3 to 4 times a week.

I always carry my XD40SC +1 and an extra mag. So thats 9 in each mag and one in the pipe.

I also carry a Glock 19 and only carry 15 instead of 15+1. I don't like to have to keep up with the +1 when unloading. Unloading for me is usually either when I'm going to do some dry fire practice for IDPA, or cleaning. In both cases, I'll generally leave my carry magazine loaded.

I top off but up to now my habit is to fire the hollow points in the gun at the range before using cheaper practice ammo. That eliminates the tedium and avoids any possible bullet setback problem.

9+1 and 2x15 spares = 45 when I carry OWB
9+1 and 1x15 spare = 30 when I carry IWB

Other than going to the range, I rotate the mags about every 6 months. Years ago I would do that every month then went to every other month after a couple of years. I don't think it was a conscious decision to wait longer. I think it was just forgetfulness. However, it doesn't appear to have had any ill effect on the mags and from what we've read on here it shouldn't.

In a real GF there is no reasonable expectation to count rounds. If you happen to need a lot of rounds and suddenly the slide locks open, you may wish you had that one additional round. Just a thought.

I have not gotten into the habit of carrying an extra magazine, as there just does not seem the right spot for it in my jeans pockets.
I may start, once I start carrying my XD9sc, putting an extra magazine in the car, so 16+1 + 10 (or 12), whatever the smaller magazine holds, but I still would only have on my person, if I was not in my car, 16+1

The ankle is a comfortable place to keep spare magazines. One example of such a rig is this one from DeSantis.

Ankle carried magazines are somewhat slower to bring into action than ones carried on the belt or in a pocket, but lots faster than the ones you left at home.

I believe Galco makes IWB mag carriers. If they do, I'm sure others do, too. Haven't gotten one yet, but have a friend who made one himself, and loves it.
Thanx,
