single-stack DAO 9mm compact roundup

#1

Post by mr.72 »

Sending my Kahr back for the third warranty repair in a year, and also breaking the holster that fits it has put me in the mood to reconsider my choice of carry pistol.

Anyone want to suggest some alternatives that fit the basic template of the CW9/P9?

that is, DAO, no manual safety, single-stack, under 1" thick, 3.5" barrel 9mms... Not necessarily polymer, but light weight is a plus. Also, full grip is a plus.

So I know the Kel-Tec PF9 and Walther PPS are the obvious alternatives, with the PF9 being somewhat cheaper and the PPS somewhat more expensive. I am ruling out the Taurus Slim because I want a gun that is designed from the get-go without a manual safety. double-stack pistols are out due to thickness (G26 etc.).

What have I overlooked?

what'd you do to your holster?
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Dunno. It is cracked. I have carried it almost daily for nearly a year, just noticed the crack in the Kydex on the outside of the holster, about 1/2" behind the belt clip, about a 2" long crack originating from the top edge. It's a FIST K3, BTW. I certainly expected it to last more than a year. I emailed FIST to see if they want to give me a discount on a replacement, etc. It is a super-comfortable holster with awesome fit and retention but the durability is not impressing me so far.

Guess it's time to lose a coupla lb. to free up that extra space in the waistband to fit the SW9VE + Crossbreed.

What about the H&K P2000 SK? Thought it is a bit thick at 1.25" and expensive! I have a USP and H&K build a fantastic pistol!

yeah... that's a bit small... looking for something more like regular "compact" dimensions, more than one finger on the grip, etc.

again... double-stack >1" thick pistol, I already have one of those.

At 3.9 " the Sig P 250 barral is a little longer than you spec. My wife has small hands and even with a double stack the small grip frame on the P250 fits small hands well. Trigger reach is good as well as magizine release reach. With a 16+1 cap this gun combins the advantages of a bigger gun with the egrononics of a smaller one. If your in the Houston area I have a small frame P250 you can try. They come STD with the med frame and most stores won't have the small frame in stock to try.

This isn't a "small hands" issue. It is an ease of concealment issue. Double-stack need not apply.

SIG P239. I think they can be made DAO with just a hammer change. Weighs more than the plastic ones, but that is a plus when shooting.

Nevermind. Can I delete this thread?

Sig P239 is 1.2" thick, same thickness as a typical double-stack... Kahr 9mms are over 1/4" thinner.

sheesh.

Wasn't just you, OE. most of the suggestions here are for midsize double-stack pistols that are over 1" thick. At least your suggestion was a single-stack :)

What's wrong with your Kahr? I have a CW9 and I love it. Granted, I've only put a couple hundred rounds through it, but so far I'm very satisfied. How has their service been? I'm guessing less than stellar if you're looking elsewhere.

Not sure what's wrong with it. Long list of things, maybe? This will be the second trip back to Kahr for repairs. I am not holding out much hope.

I really like the gun. The worst of the problems (bad 75% light strikes) didn't crop up until the 300+ round marker. I hope Kahr can make it right, but I would like to explore my options for an alternate weapon.
