An odd caliber for some of you.

I have a local dealer that has a few boxes of an odd ball caliber that some of you guys might find interesting. I am not sure if it is 3 or 5 boxes he has on the shelf but he has a limited quantity of .44 colt cartridge ammunition. I also know that he is willing to sell it at cost to get rid of it if anyone wants it. So who here can tell us how were original firearms modified to shoot the .44 colt?

Hmmm....a good one. If memory serves me correctly, it was introduced in the 1870's or 1880's. It was commonly used to convert the Colt 1860 percussion revolver to a cartridge gun. It didn't see a very long life, as the .45 long colt cartridge came shortly afterwards. It cannot fit any .44 special gun...or .44 Russian, .44 S&W or any variant.

I never owned a pistol using that caliber. The closest thing I had was a Remington 1873 44-40 single action. I would have loved to have had one of those conversion Colt's. They'd be worth a mint today.

Looks like it was popular for a little while with both black powder and smokeless powder loads. But was quickly replaced with modern cartridges.
I learned something new.
