BEWARE buying ammo etc. from Cabella's
I just returned from a 90 minute round trip drive to Cabella's to purchase ammo for my new 1911, as well as a few other things. I was pulling out the various boxes of ammunition, and randomly opened the box of .40 S&W Winchester Silvertip Hollow Point ammunition that I'd bought for my XD .40. When I showed my wife the HP bullets, I was shocked when I had actually purchased a box full of target, FMJ bullets - someone had switched the contents of the Silvertip box with the less expensive target bullets, and I just paid $41.99 for 50 rounds of target bullets. :barf:
I called the store and spoke with Customer Service, and they were not willing to do anything for me because of "federal law". Not even mail me a gift card for the difference in purchase price. I can understand their reasoning - there is no way for them to prove what I am saying, but that's where "Customer Service" comes in.
This is the SECOND time this has happened to me at this store. The first time was with a Harris Bipod. I had purchased the more expensive swivel model, and someone had swapped the packaging for the non-swivel model, which is about $30 cheaper.
The store location is on I-35 north of Fort Worth. That's the last time I visit that store.

They stock their handgun ammo out in the open? Every place around here stocks it behind the sales counter...I guess this is why.

I would take it back to the store and ask to speak to the store manager, if he doesn't do anything then I would ask for the 1-800 number for customer service and keep asking them for their supervisor until you get to someone who will rectify the situation.particle wrote:I just returned from a 90 minute round trip drive to Cabella's to purchase ammo for my new 1911, as well as a few other things. Good luck with this tactic ... Using this method used to work at just about every retail store. However, in recent years, many people (even managers) could care less about giving good customer service. In my experience you will get a semi-placating, nonchalant "Sorry about that." Rather than any kind of meaningful satisfaction. Even a sincere "I am sorry" would be nice.Right2Carry wrote:I would take it back to the store and ask to speak to the store manager, if he doesn't do anything then I would ask for the 1-800 number for customer service and keep asking them for their supervisor until you get to someone who will rectify the situation.particle wrote:I just returned from a 90 minute round trip drive to Cabella's to purchase ammo for my new 1911, as well as a few other things. Sounds like you need to go back and "buy" a box of target ammo.

Instead of avoiding cabella's i'll just use this experience as a warning to make sure and check what's really in the box.
flb: I was thinking the same thing But I guess that wouldn't be fair to the next person that bought the "hollow points"

That's a pretty dirty deal, but thinks for the tip...I will never the store without checking my ammo again. I have not been doing that.

Re: BEWARE buying ammo etc. from Cabella's
When I was job hunting I worked part time at a retail store. The "theft-prevention" people would find all kinds of empty packaging throughout the store where someone stole stuff. Empty boxes on the shelves, things "swapped" out, parts missing off of displayed items.......just unbelievable.
Just last week I went to Office Max and puchased 6 ink cartridges for my photo printer. When checking out, one box looked opened and sure enough, a "used" cartridge was in it!!!! I'm sure someone purchased it and then returned it with the used cartridge!!!!
It was also an eye opener of how much of the theft was done by store employees. That's what your ammo swap sounds like to me.....an inside job.
It's sad to say but I make the store open the product (if it's within certain monetary limits) to see if indeed it looks new and not messed with, etc.

I buy mostly target ammo anyways, but the few boxes of defense ammo I bought, I did open em and look at em.

Re: BEWARE buying ammo etc. from Cabella's
Given the number of people that park in the ammo aisle and stare like deer in headlights at the boxes like they have never seen ammo before I would think that little switcharoo would be difficult to do. I went to the offending Cabella's Friday and the ammo aisles were in complete gridlock, which is usually the case.
I agree that this was probably an inside job. Or perhaps the D.B. took two boxes then wandered around the store making the switch elsewhere, perhaps in the cammo clothing section where no one could see them
I think I'll stick to ordering my ammo online.

Thats a good reminder to check your ammo before you check out.. I never look at target ammo, but defense ammo I do.
Ammo here is on display, nothing behind the counters. Nobody has a real good selection though. I've been looking all over town for .41 ammo, everyone laughs at me when I ask for it... Last time I tried to order ammo online, everyone was out of stock..

I would ask that person which section of Federal law they are citing. If they can't tell me, then ask for a manager who can.particle wrote:I just returned from a 90 minute round trip drive to Cabella's to purchase ammo for my new 1911, as well as a few other things. If the manager cannot, you can simply cut through the charade and get down to the real reason they won't rectify the situation. Once you have that reason, you can take it to corporate headquarters and include the lies about federal law and the names of the parties involved and see if you can't get any kind of satisfaction or let them know that they have lost a customer for life and all the money and sales that go along with you.

I think you would be suprised about exactly how much of that store can be seen. There Loss Prevention system in there is incredable.

Somebody pulled a "switcheroo" in the store and got the high priced spread for the cost of butter.
I've found Cabela's internet customer service to be stellar, FWIW.

Re: BEWARE buying ammo etc. from Cabella's
The first thing I would do is get the CS person's name, insist on talking to a manager, get their name, if they do not fix the situation ( they can give you a gift card for the difference), call the headquarter's and talk to their boss. I would post this on every forum, using the names of the people you talked to and the time and date you talked to them. I would fax a copy of each time you make a post on a forum ( feel free to use my reply) to the headquarter's so they will know you are not going away. You can start a boycott, I understand that this alone will not put them out of business but I will guarantee you this, it will cost them more than the 25.00 to 30.00 difference you lost on your purchase.Customer service has disapeared and I understand that it is not just about the money but if nothing is done, they will continue to treat their customers like this and get away with it. I will not buy anything else there and I spend about 2,500.00 a year at Cabela's. Keep us posted.particle wrote:I just returned from a 90 minute round trip drive to Cabella's to purchase ammo for my new 1911, as well as a few other things.
