Who has the cheapest deal on 9mm ammo?

I have found the best pricing at either Wal-Mart or Academy Sports. Academy carries Monarch 9mm steel case for about $8 a box of 50, but you can buy a 100 Winchester White Box brass at Wal-Mart for $18 and change. I prefer the WWB over Monarch, but have never had any trouble with either.

Last time I bought ammo, I bought it from Natchez Shooter's Supply.

Current price is 7.99 for a box of Blazer, Academy is 9.99 for the same ammo.

Yep; the best deal depends on what you want, or will accept. For example, to date I've never purchased steel-cased 9mm, or "remanufactured," or bulk surplus ammo. Doesn't mean I won't; just means I haven't. I've bought milsurp rifle ammo.

What that site can't do well is record local, physical-facility sales. Your neighborhood Wal-Mart may have the best price on WWB 9mm, but mine may have had none in stock for a month. YMMV.

As a bidness sort of guy, what I do recommend is factoring in all costs and distill it to a per-round price. Shipping and/or sales tax is the general biggie here, but if your local Wal-Mart is 20 miles away, these days ya gotta consider the cost of gas.

For reloading, I feel you need to factor in all the component-plus-acqusition costs, plus an amortization of all equipment purchased for the purpose, plus an hourly valuation of the worth of your time. Just me, but the sum of that equation is why I've never gotten into reloading. But there is a qualitative input here: there are really good shooters who handload for accuracy, competition power-factor, or hunting. I ain't that good.

Can you elaborate. Everytime I look at reloading, the economics do not work out to be cheaper than Wal-Mart. Can you give me a break down how this is possible? I would love to reload, but everyone I know that reload says to not do it if you are trying to get ammo for cheaper. Their main reasons focused around better quality components.

I WANT to reload, but just can't justify it, from what I've read thus far, on the premise of lowering my cost to shoot.

You have to do it over a very long period of time, I've never reloaded, but I have an uncle who did (it's that weird contraption when I was 5!)

I quickly ran some numbers on the cost of reloading 9mm, 115gr Ranier plated bullets.

It came out to just over $0.15 per round or about $7.50 per box. This is based on regular prices for the components. Smart buying can lower it some more. If you can use lead bullets instead of jacketed or plated, that will lower it significantly.

Primers are about $26/1000 or $0.026
Ranier plated bullets $44/500 or $0.088
Powder was based on $26/lb using a 5 grain load $0.019
Brass runs about $0.20 each and I assumed being able to use it 10 times $0.02

You can pick up range brass for free if you inspect it carefully before using. You can buy once fired brass for half the cost or less of new brass.

I pay considerably less for all of the components listed above. I figure my cost is about $0.04-$0.05 per round for the specified load.

What you hear people say is that you won't save any money, you'll just shoot more. Whether this is true is up to you, but you will be paying a fraction of the cost of factory ammo.

I bought 500rnds of Winchester White Box at Wal-Mart for just under $100. Thanks for the tip. I can't believe the price of ammo these days!

Wolf 9mm Ammo 1000 Round Case - $165... =-]

IMHO the wolf ammo sux.

it's weak, noticeably low recoil, and in my Sigma was not strong enough to lock the slide back when empty and ejected brass right into your face. WWB on the other hand is way better and for brass, it's just about the same price or only a little more.

on the Wolf. I've had a lot of trouble out of Wolf ammo.

Nowadays all my practice shooting is done with WWB from Wal-Mart. I bought about 6,000 rounds of .45acp and another 6,000 in 9mm and I bet I won't regret that down the road. I'm storing them in ammo cans with moisture absorbers.

The best deal on Ammo right now in reloadable brass case is the Serbian made Monarch (green box) from Academy. It's $8.79/50 vs the $7.99/50 in the Russian made steel cased Monarch(blue box). Both of them are good-if you don't intend to reload,and your gun is OK'd for use with steel cased ammo,I'd get the "blue box" and save the money. I bought 500 rounds of the blue box steel cased when it was $6.79/50 about 2 months ago,and never had a single issue with it firing,jamming,etc,etc. The price has since went up a bit to $7.99,but it's still not bad compared to others.

Wal Mart has WWB "valu-pak" 100 round loose packages for $18.63.

That's only a little more than even the steel Wolf ammo from Academy.

IMHO it's a way better value.

my dad bought a couple of those not long ago when I came to visit. he counted the number of rounds in the box and found that we ended up with a couple extra!
