Small single stack 1911

Post by tomneal »

Looking for deep carry options

I prefer a 1911 because that's what I shoot.

Anyone have a small, 1911 they can recommend?
Must be reliable. Should be accurate.
Could be .40 but I prefer .45

Blue, Stainless, or Aluminum ?

My Wart Hog is too fat.
My full size Kimber is too big.

Any thoughts?

I've thoroughly enjoyed my Kimber Ultra CDP. It's lightweight, accurate and totally reliable.

The one on the left in this photo in the Ultra CDP. The one on the right is a Kimber Compact Aluminum/Stainless (4" top, compact frame)

It's my primary carry.

the new STI minis are looking great...
a micro-1911 in .40
they also have similar 1911's in 9mm and .45acp...
none of them will allow me to get a decent grip with my big hands, but they look great.

- I still see these in new inventories every now and then...I'm not sure one could get much smaller in 45ACP.

I also would have suggested Detonics USA but they folded 2ndQtr of 2007. The Combat Master probably would have fit your needs well. I know John Farnam really liked his copy a lot.

I rotate the Ultra CDPII as my carry pistol as well. It's very accurate.

If your only objection to the Wart Hawg is that it's too fat for your current need, then maybe the single-stack version (holds 6+1) would work. The black version is only $681 new from Bud's Guns (and that includes shipping but not the receiving FFL fee):

My wife may wind up with one of these; she thinks it's cute. And no, I don't know why she thinks it's cuter than the Springfield or any of the other small 1911 45s. Nor do I intend to ask.

Years ago, I sold my STI LS 40 because of reliability.

I have a full size Kimber but it was made before they went to the new safety. Are those safety's reliable?

I do like the idea of another Para.

I vote for the Kimber Ultra CDP, too. I love mine. It is accurate (get bulls-eye award at BUG matches), reliable (shoot BUG matches with it), and so easy to conceal.

I use mine at BUG matches as well. Bullseye award? Hmmmm... My club doesn't do that. I'll be bringing it up at the next one though.

You may also want to check out the Springfield micro-compact 1911 in .45. I was looking at both the Kimber Ultra CDP II and the Springfield. They are basically the same size and have the same look. I went with the Springfield because it felt more comfortable in my hand (I think the grip might be a hair longer on the SF). The Kimber may be easier to come by though. I saw many of them at the last Big Town show.

My EDC rotates from a Colt Combat Commander to an Officer's Model sized Llama MiniMax .45. The Llama is small and easy to carry, but still gives me 6+1 rounds. It has the factory dull black finish, and I haven't had any unusual holster wear, rusting, etc. My wife has the same gun in 9mm.
