BTW, USAA probably has low auto insurance rates because their members hit and run. My wife's car was hit last year in the school parking lot. I witness wrote down the license plate number. Our insurance company, State Farm, tracked down the address. I had the police confront the lady at her house and she confessed. USAA reluctantly paid for the damage, and did not apologize or act as though the person did anything wrong by driving away. I'm a member of the bank but not the insurance. They could have cared less. I took the car to the USAA approved shop and the bumper had to be repainted 4 times and was still not right. An inspector finally came out from USAA and again could give a hoot. Work was OK, but not great. They used fake bumper parts or refurb parts instead of new genuine Toyota parts. Probably devalued our car. Not impressed by USAA response and don't care attitude.

I got a quote from them for liability only on my 2 vehicles considering I am a Vet. I expected to see some savings, I was wrong.

They were low to start (one time internet purchase) but that indicated to me that after 6 months it would go up higher. I called and questioned C/S and they confirmed my suspicions were correct.

In the meantime I had found this and other info concerning their anti-gun activities. After telling them that they were higher than my current State Farm policy, they had no reply other than to bundle. I don't want to bundle anything, just 2 cars on minimum legal liability. I then informed them I was also not happy about their anti-gun policies and based on the higher price and the anti-gun, I will not be doing business with them.

They didn't seem to care.......they said "Have a nice day". :banghead:

BTW, you have a right to take it where you want and to use original parts. Most insurance co's will tell you they have co's they work with, but I have always insisted on taking it to people I knew.

Might want to read your policy to be sure ..Id bet not all policys are the same in that regard.

USAA, state in the policy that a car over 2 model years old, will have used or remanufactured part installed as part of the repair when available.. Or wording to that effect. It is NOT your choice, it is there’s… Mostly.. Your right about the shop, that is your call, they cannot insist on a specific shop… which is where I get my new parts installed ..

If the body shop can not successfully make the repair with aftermarket, used, or recondition parts ,, USAA (the place I know best) will allow the body shop to purchase and install new parts.
Good working relationship with the body shop, and a good working relationship between the body shop and the INS adjuster is a huge help here.
IANAL.. but… what I can read in the policy, what the insurance company has stated, and what my family lawyer (criminal, not adlaw) is.. it’s in the policy, and very enforceable.

Have a read at the docs used to sign up a body shop into the USAA repair program

USAA historically has offered very good service, does a super job of marketing their brand and "exclusive member" oriented business model.

As someone that competes with them on a regular basis, we find we can be very competitive in pricing, service and coverage in many given situations. We also respect the 2nd Amendment to our Constitution. While we can't be all things to all people, we are willing to compete with them for business.

If you are truly upset with their policy stance with regard to concealed carry and are interested in considering your alternatives, PM me and we will be happy to assist you any way we can. :patriot:

I was given a form by my body shop stating it is state insurance laws that we can demand our parts be factory equipment and shop of our choice. I suppose it could have changed, this was about 10 years ago, but it was a form with the insurance commision statements on it.

Just got through reading on a couple of body shops from TX that you do have the right to OEM parts, but if your insurance covers only aftermarket, then you can pay the difference.

I have been a USAA member for more than 40 years. In that time, I figure it is the most valuable reward for military service, other than the thanks of a grateful nation. I have saved more on car and home insurance, and credit card interest rates, than I MADE the whole time I was in the Navy, active and reserve, nearly 20 years.

I have always had superb service from USAA. All the issues which have arisen have been dealt with promptly, fairly and satisfactorily, several auto claims, a couple of house claims, bogus charges etc on credit cards and the like. It is hard to imagine some of the stories I have read on this thread recounting problems with USAA.

That said, I am dismayed to learn of their policy with regard to CHL. I have lived in California the entire time I have been a USAA member. There is no law that allows putting up a sign to prohibit licensed possession of a weapon, as almost nobody has one. I have been one of the relatively few.

When I retire and move back to Texas soon, I may have to make other arrangements.

One suggestion... when comparing insurance coverage, don't look at premium and deductible only. The provisions of policies are not identical and can vary widely. Moreover, there are policy differences between insurance companies, which although they should be strictly according to the language of their insurance policy, they are not. The sales department is often not in contact with the claims department, if you get my drift. The Old Rancher always taught that "the cheapest oats usually have already been run through the horse," and there is nothing about insurance that requires suspension of this maxim.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

:iagree:

This is absolute truth. I wish more of my clients were aware of this. I try to tell people this all the time and they just dismiss it as sales speak. They focus on premium and deductible and have no idea about the actual differences in coverage and terms. Asking for a homeowner's policy is like asking for a red ford truck.

I am curious what this would have to do with you needing to make other arrangements. If you feel the need to protest their policies I fail to see how where you live would make a difference.

I generally shop around every year when my home policy comes up for renewal. This year I checked USAA just to see. I currently have GEICO for auto and home - well, the homeowners is underwritten by Lloyds and the windstorm by TWIA (like everybody in coastal counties). Anyway, they were a few dollars cheaper on home but nearly *TWICE* as expensive on auto. I tried Farmers again as well (used to have them) and they were a more expensive on both.

I haven't had anybody come anywhere close to the price GEICO charges for our auto.

I haven't had to worry about carrying at USAA heretofore because I haven't had a CCW except for a few years, and have never been in a USAA facility since I started with them in the late '60's. We just sold the house here and I am retiring to the hill country north of San Antonio, where I will 1) undoubtedly have a carry permit and 2) have occasion to go to the USAA office perhaps.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
