Re: Outragous - Dicks Sporting Goods
I don't have a problem with them not selling to illegal aliens. I think it's a good idea, but I quit shopping at Dick's years ago because of other policies that offended me. I remember when they would have special pricing on 10 boxes of ammo, but the employees seemed to get nervous whenever someone bought that much. There was also the policy of not selling AR-15s after the Sandy Hook shooting. I'm also offended by their prices.

Re: Outragous - Dicks Sporting Goods
Dick's has a history, if I remember correctly, of being on the left side of 2nd Amendment issues. I don't recall the exact things the company has done, perhaps not selling modern sporting rifles? Whatever it was I quit buying anything from Dick's. I still go in the stores to look around and have found items I wanted, I just note the item and buy elsewhere. Hardly ever do I find that Dick's has the best price on things anyway.
"Don't shoot the messenger" applies to the store personnel- they don't dictate corporate policies.
I understand the OP's frustration but berating clerks and managers for corporate policies makes as much sense as berating a LEO for enforcing laws enacted by the legislature and governor.

I see nothing wrong with the question that Dick's asked. What I do see wrong is the rude way you acted toward the young clerk. He did not make the policy, he was just doing his job.

It was the credit card processor's terminal that asked the question, not the clerk.
the electronic device you use to process you credit card and the like asked me to confirm that I was a United States citizen or an alien legally in the country.

If I am ever at a disagreement with a store, clerk, or what not and I am at the register, I will leave the store with everything on the counter without an argument.
In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.

Dick's has ALWAYS been relatively gun-unfriendly, treating their firearms area as an obligation, rather than a business anchor. They went into full retreat after Sandy Hook. Haven't set foot in one since. Don't intend to change that policy.
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

I will ask to talk to the manager on the side and discuss the issue politely , email to the corporate , and go public on the interwebs. Making a scene at the checkout and abusing the checkout clerk doesn't forward our cause.jason812 wrote:If I am ever at a disagreement with a store, clerk, or what not and I am at the register, I will leave the store with everything on the counter without an argument.

I agree here. This is a simple cover yourself question from the lawyers "We asked, and he said yes". There is no demand for proof. It does not offend me to proclaim my U.S. citizenship.
Although...I'm of the opinion that you should be required to present a picture ID when you use a credit/bank card!

I would rather do business with a store that asks if I'm a US citizen than one that posts a no guns signs, even an invalid one. Either way, throwing a hissy fit is not the answer.

any illegal alien would just answer that he was legal and buy it. Self certification only works for those already allowed.

Re: Outragous - Dicks Sporting Goods
I don't think anyone wants illegal aliens buying ammunition. I'm not sure Dick's policy would really prevent that, but it's the way they have chosen to do it. The clerk at least called the manager who unsuccessfully attempted to help by pass the requirement, so give him credit for that. The Dick's near me which opened just a few months ago and doesn't carry firearms at all. Instead they have an attached Field and Stream store that does carry firearms, including AR-15's. Whether corporate cowardice or smart business practice I leave to you to decide and also to choose whether to shop at Dick's.
When the GCA of 1968 was passed one of the requirements to purchase pistol ammunition was presenting a drivers license. I was a large chain store sporting goods department manager at that time. Besides presenting a valid DL every sale had to be recorded in log books with name, address, type and quantity of ammo in addition to recording the driver's number of the purchaser. My memory is that a signature was also required, but I'm old. BTW, All .22 rimfire ammunition was considered pistol ammo. I took plenty of derisive commentary for following a policy I had nothing to do with. I thought it was a stupid, ineffective law, but it was a requirement to follow it. Berating the clerk for adhering to a store policy and making a scene is not something I would do. Whether or not your actions reflect on our "cause", I know not, but I remember what I thought of some of those irate customers.

Re: Outragous - Dicks Sporting Goods
Just another useless feel good policy like the security theater at the airport. How is asking if someone is an illegal alien going to stop them from buying ammunition? It's just stupid. I order all mine from Ammoman.com. If I'm buying SD ammo, sometimes I buy at Academy. Dick's doesn't sell MSR's or handguns because they're a bunch of pantywaists. I generally avoid going there.

Exactly. I haven't bought a stick of gum at Dicks, let alone anything else, since their idiotic black rifle flap. We surely don't need that kind of merchant here in Texas.Bitter Clinger wrote:

The Dicks at the Parks Mall in Arlington, Texas sells handguns. I buy from Dicks on occasion and have never been asked that question. I believe the Dicks in Cedar Hill also sells hand guns.
