I always loved the inserts Comp-tac includes with holsters:

In response to your statement about safety having nothing to do with experience I think we all get somewhat lazy as we gain experiance. We get too confident with ourselves and forget. It is always a god idea to read an article like this jsut to remind yourself that no matter how good we are we all make a msitake.

Great Post, Good Read.

Good post, just read it again for the tenth time. I'm getting forgetful
but this I want to allways remember. If I ever come to the place I
can't easily remember these rules I hope I have the sense to lock away my gun.

It is an excellent post.

But even though I am new here I am going to disagree with one small -- perhaps trivial sounding -- but CRITICAL point.

I am betting this is obvious even, but think that those reading it need to hear this critical distinction:

It wasn't "LAZINESS".

Failure to check that gun, or almost failure to check the gun, was in no way "LAZY" since no real effort or time is required, but rather not BELIEVING the most important rules: The gun is ALWAYS loaded.

And: Humans make mistakes.

It is a matter of belief, not laziness -- if you, or I, or all of us REALLY believe that every gun is loaded for the purpose of safe handling then we will never be tempted to take a shortcut, or be lazy, or be embarrassed by
an obsession with checking it when there is any possibility of doubt.

The gun is always loaded because people make mistakes.

And, because people with guns who make mistakes make BIG mistakes.

I love that post.

Rant away, because the messages with tips, imperatives, and stories like those are going to SAVE lives.

Eternal thanks for your contribution.

I am going to have to get my wife to read this, I think that she would learn something from it. Seeing as I learned something. This is something that we should all read each time that we go to the range.

I guess I wanna add one to the mix...

When in doubt, check it again! (following all the rules noted above)

If you go to a gunshow...And take a gun to be looked at or worked on...

Unload it first, and ziptie the action before you get there...I think that shows prudence on your part at the front door...

I believe that removes all doubt at that point...
