Happy birthday to me!

#1

Post by 74novaman »

Since I'm hard to shop for, my wife just tells me to get something I want every year for my birthday. Works for me! :biggrinjester:

This year I decided I wanted some new knives so I looked around and picked up these 3:

From top to bottom: Cold Steel GI Tanto, Cold Steel Kobun, and Byrd Hawkbill. I figured a good full size knife, a boot knife and a pocket knife would be good additions to my collection.

Both cold steel knives had nice secure-ex sheaths, and all 3 knives were very sharp out of the box.

Byrd is Sypderco's cheaper Chinese made brand, which was perfect for what I wanted this for: Opening boxes and other misc every day tasks. I also went with fully serrated because that's more useful for the mundane tasks we normally use our knives for.

The GI Tanto put up to a heck of a lot of abuse from various videos I saw, so for the price I thought I'd check it out. It will likely become my "rough use around the ranch" type knife because it was cheap enough that if I do manage to lose or break it, I don't mind replacing it. If I like how it holds up, I might even buy another couple to throw in my car and into a "go bag".

The Kobun is actually the one I'm most excited about. The blade is 5.5" so it is good to go for carry here in Texas, and is very light and thin. So far I've tried it both IWB and in a boot, and it rides comfortably.

I'm pretty pleased with all 3 knives so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they hold up to some abuse.

How do you carry the knife in your boot? Do you have something sewn in? I'd be curious to see pictures as I have been thinking about getting a boot knife as well.

Currently, I've only tried it with the sheath tucked into the sock of my left boot. I wear comfy boot socks that are tall enough to hold the sheath anytime I bother to wear boots, so it is pretty secure. I've been thinking about using some paracord on the sheath and actually securing the sheath to my leg, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

To be honest I far prefer IWB with it. Easier and quicker to access. Carrying a boot knife is a lot like carrying a gun in an ankle holster...it's doable, but usually there are better options.

I just like the sound of "boot knife".

Happy Birthday Novaman - Knowing that you are a pretty good chef, I half-way expected to see a new set of kitchen knives.

Thanks Bill!

I actually have a couple of okay cooking knives, and I did get a new grilling recipe book for this birthday. I have a friend who actually went to school to become a chef. His cooking knife collection was more expensive AND extensive than my gun or knife collection combined.

Happy birthday 74novaman! How come you didn't buy another AK?

Knives are cheaper. :cheers2: Edited to add: And actually in stock right now, as opposed to most AR stuff.

I did pick up a PSA blem lower on Nov 5th though...so now I have 2 AR lowers and no functional AR.

Wow! I can't imagine what he owns. Is there some kind of fully-automatic or supressor knives that I don't know about?

Apparently "Shun" knives are highly regarded in the Culinary universe.

Here's some prices: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/shop/cut ... _type=lnav
