Re: How Much ammo do you have on hand at home adn why?
My friend keeps like 5k of ammo of .45, 9mm. He has about 10k rounds of 22LR though..
Could be more though. He buys ammo in bulk.. and I do mean BULK.
Edit: BTW, this is an old photo. So don't get mad if you count them and it doesn't add up to the above numbers. lol..

I figure I have just about enough for most situations up to and including major rioting.

Okay, you made me go count. Have 2150 rounds of .45 and 1300 rounds of 9mm. Wife and daughter carry 9's and they buy their own unless I find it on sale.
I guess I need to go ammo shopping.

I read somewhere that no one neeeeeds more than 6 (or 10) "bullets" ... it was on the Interwebs, so it must be true.

Re: How Much ammo do you have on hand at home adn why?
At first glance it seems that most people are waaaaay heavy in handgun ammo in self-defense calibres (9mm, 45 acp) and in varmint rounds (.223), and not nearly heavy enough in everyday hunting rounds like .22 LR, 12 ga bird and buck shot, and medium game (like .308). Planning for the zombocalypse, and not for extended hard times? The zombies will quickly die off from 45 sized holes, and we'll be wanting something that will take a squirrel or rabbit or dove cleanly, or skittish game at range. Not telling, but many thousands of rounds of 22 LR should dominate the mix. At 3 cents apiece now, they will be worth real money in trade post emergency because nobody will be able to make them.

I have around 1200 or so of 5.56
and then 2000 or so in 9MM and .40
500-600 in .22
the why, I pick up a box of ammo every time I go to walmart so I dont have to wait in line at the front.

I have about 1200 in .45 and 200 in .22
I guess that’s enough cause I can’t carry it anyway.

Currently
6k of 9mm
2k of 45
1k of 357SIG
3K of 223/.556
500 of .380
A few hundred of hunting rounds (30-30, 7 mag, etc).
Carry ammo is about 5-10% of each.

Re: How Much ammo do you have on hand at home adn why?
It really cracks me up that any "news" report that mentions someone being found to have 100's or 1000's of rounds of ammo, is really completely out of touch with the average gun owner. I have 1000's of rounds in my safe and enough reloading supplies for 1000's more and I'm on the light side of many forum members.
I make a point of asking my "firearm ignorant" family members if they think 1000 rounds is a lot. They usually say yes, but then I put a pair of 555 "bulk" boxes of .22lr in front of them and they always say, "really...that's it?" I take them to the range and after they are done they ask how much they shot. "About 200 rounds" I say. "Really?!!! It didn't seem like that many" they say.
Not to mention that the press always counts rounds possesed in total. They don't break it down into specific caliber. "They suspect had over 10k rounds when he was arrested..." ummm...in 100-1000 round increments per caliber you ignorant oafs!!!!
Anyway back on topic...I try to keep at least 1000 of anything I shoot. The exceptions being my Milsurp WWII rifles. For those I keep a single 20rd box of an appropriate hunting load for each in my "emergency" can. I usually have the materials to reload about 100-500rds at a time for those rifles for range time...but those rounds don't have to be for the range
