Bushmaster M4

#1

Post by stash »

Anyone have any opinion on this rifle? From what I have read it is based on the AR15 platform. From the little I have read about it, it seems a simple straight forward rifle. I don't hunt but would like to own a long gun for plinking and maybe just to keep around the casita which is located in a sorta rural area. Seems like ammo is pretty inexpensive and seems available everywhere. Cabela's will have them on sale pretty soon in the high 900's but could probably find them cheaper.

Thanks

I just recently picked up a Bushy Texas Edition (http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... 3F16M4TXIO) from GT Distributors, and think it's a great AR to start out on. I've put about 500 rounds through it with no FTF or FTE, and accuracy seems great. I've heard you can save some money by buying a separate upper and lower and building it yourself, but I was looking for an inexpensive, out of the box plinker. I'm very happy with it.

Thanks Bi - I am going to check them out. If it is good enough for the DPS it will be OK for me. Plus less expensive than Cabelas.

I've posted this link before but it's still good to hit from time to time.

Basic primer on AR rifles.

It might take a couple hours to read through but take your time and take notes. He explains away all the AR "buzzwords" in a very non-technical way so that once you know what your ultimate purpose is, you can more specifically target the type of rifle you want to look for.

You can buy or build a better rifle for less money.

:iagree:

S&W would generally give you a "better" gun in the price point. I don't really hold the BM brand in high esteem. Some may disagree, but that is my solicited opinion. I feel like they cut corners by skipping the inspection and QC processes of the "top tier" makers.

I do not have an AR/M4....YET! :biggrinjester: Although I do have other "black guns" (and the like). Looking at my inventory of weapons I think an AR would be a good all-around gun for protection, TEOTWAWKI/zobmie/riot gun, probably a little better than some of the other stuff I have, we'll see though.

I'm "sort of" in the market....in other words, hopefully near future....I'm considering the S&W M&P15OR-MOE. I've thought about building one too, but I think for my first one I'll get a "turn-key" and go from there. I've got a buddy that has a brother-in-law that is a builder (as in, a gun manufacturer) and he does custom AR stuff, I cannot recall the name...but his "stuff" is on my list, probably for #2.

Thank you for posting the links, I'm gonna have some reading material!

I bought that very rifle at Cabelas for $1,100.00 a month before the 2008 election. Looks like I paid way too much, but if I remember right, it was not that bad of a price then. Anyhow, i've put about 500 - 1,000 rds. of Wolf through it since then, no problems or even any jams that I can remember.

My first AR was a Bushmaster XM15E2S. Had a problem with barrel indexing (needed 17 clicks of windage to zero) so Bushmaster had the upper picked up at my house, they fixed it, and returned it in 2 weeks, all at no cost to me. The fact that they stood behind their product and honored their warranty is a big "PLUS" in my book. (More so since I found some years back that Colt's does neither.)

The only stoppages I've had directly involve a "refurbished" 20 round mag I bought during the dark days of the AWB. Throw that mag away, and I have a couple of thousand totally trouble-free rounds through it using a variety of USGI, NHMTG, and Brownell's magazines. I usually use iron sights, but with a handle-mounted scope and good ammo it WILL produce sub-MOA groups in my hands.

I disagree with your assessment of Colt's warranty and service. I've seen them fix an issue that was widespread across a bulk order very quickly. They demonstrated great concern and good follow through with an issue of a bulk individual purchased LE6920s through work.

Went to the Mesquite Rodeo Gun Show yesterday and a nice DPMS flat top carbine followed me home. Got it, 30 round mag and a soft tactical case for $695 out the door. Bought some extra mags and an Explorer red/green 2x retical sight as well. Hope to go to the range this week.

I bought my first Bushmaster at the local Academy 5 years ago. There are sights which will crap on the Bushmaster because it is not one more expensive ARs. Back in the day Bushmaster was all the rage. They are good guns just take care of them and keep them clean. Never had any problems with mine.

I have a 16" Bushmaster that I haven't had any problems with. Probably put around 1,000 rounds through it.
