I would have suggested a 10/22 for your first rifle for the reasons others said but if you're happy with the Mosin Nagant, that's the most importante thing.

Icing on the cake. If you have the bayonet, you can use it as a boar spear for pig hunting.

Sure. Took these this morning. FYI, from the markings on the shank I've identified it as coming from Izhevsk (Soviet Union). I've gotten it cleaned up, though from what I've read there will be more cosmoline seeping out of the barrel after a trip to the range.

You are correct. It is an Ishvesk. They were kind of rough at that time due to putting out as many as they could for the war. Couldn't tell but if the sling slots have screws it's a pre-war stock...if they are pressed in it is a post war refurb stock. The Mosin Nagants have become my thing lately...still learning after 4 months of research. And bought another one today.

Perhaps, but then I couldn't work for Apple. And it just so happens that I really, really, really like my job; 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, 4 hour lunches, and, best of all, I work from home. Only catch is that I have to live within 90 miles of where the Dallas hub is located.

Speaking of 4 hour lunches, yesterday I went out to GPSR on my lunch break. I had them look over the Mosin and the RSO said that I did a really good job cleaning it up and there shouldn't be any issue shooting it. So I went for it. I was nervous (after all, I'd never fired a rifle before) and my first shot didn't even come close to the target. But after I new what to expect, I settled in and put 19 more down range.

All in all, I had a blast. I'm impressed by the accuracy of a 70 year old gun that's been packed in cosmoline for who only knows how long. I'm looking forward to my next day at the range with it. Though I do need to get a recoil pad. That steel butt plate is a monster!

Mosin's were sighted in with the bayonet attached. They will shoot high and to one side without it.

I'm telling you, 22 Long CB ammo will be almost silent out of that little rifle.

To be honest, I don't think the noise will bother Samantha. Compared to the .22 pistol, the rifle will be very quiet.

The Crickett is single shot and their website says 22 short is OK. I often see 22 short CB ammo at Walmart. A box of the CCI brand is only six or seven bucks at Walmart, so it's not too expensive to start her on that if you think noise is a problem.

I know you're reluctant to get a 22lr as your first rifle and I assume it's because you're not taking it's firepower seriously. If your range allows you to do so, make a big block of jello (it's kinda like "ballistic gelating") and shoot at it with "super sniper subsonic (sss)" 22lr ammo. It is highly penetrating and will tumble for maximum stopping power, kinda like .223/5.56. Get a bolt action, not a 10/22 because semi-auto guns will not cycle some of the specialty .22lr ammo such as sss ammo. BTW, sss ammo is not only powerful, but nearly silent because there is no sonic boom as the bullet travels through the air since the bulet is subsonic. It is highly penetrating because it is very heavy.
