Warning Cabela's (in Buda) anti firearms policy

#1

Post by j1132s »

In case you're planning to visit Cabela's in Buda. This is the first store I encountered that had anything related to prohibiting firearms.

I went to Cabela's (a large outdoors store in Buda) for the first time during this past weekend. I was supprised to see a lot of signs at the entrance doors mentioning that you must checkin your firearm at the service desk. This isn't the 30.06 sign, so I ignored it.

I was carry my HK P2000 OWB under a thin jacket. I think possibly a few employees may have seen my gun since I tried out some jackets there and had to take mine off. (I wasn't planning to buy anything when I went there. Otherwise, I would not have carried OWB.)

So, it looks like the employees either don't care about their own store policy or they just didn't see my gun. But just a warning for you in case you are planning a visit.

I've seen those signs at Gander Mountain here in Houston. I think they are directed at people bringing their firearms in for appraisals or service.

In fact the sign at the Gander Mountain in Spring specifically states that it does not pertain to law enforcement or CHL'ers.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I have seen this signage at Cabela's in Fort Worth and Gander Mountain in Corsicana and the Houston area and it is intended for people bringing in firearms for repairs or trade-in. If signage is not identical to 30.06, it does not apply to CHL.

About a month ago, I was paying for my purchases at the Ft. Bend County Gander Mountain when I spotted a man and his son walk in the door with an old pump shotgun. Since dove season was in full-swing, I decided that dad needed to get the old shotgun fixed or replaced. The girls at the customer service desk were a bit rattled and called a manager-type to the front. The manager carried the shotgun to the firearms section at the back of the store, with man and son following. I looked over to my wife and did this:

Ok, that makes sense. Although Cabela's sign seems to mean everybody.

I walked in w/o planning to buy anything and walked out with arms full of stuff. Their prices and selection were pretty good.

I keep trying to talk them into issuing a library card so I can check out some of those high dollar firearms they have in their "gun library".

Yes, I enjoyed browsing their gun library too, very well organized and displayed.... hmm, a library card..

I spent 1.5 hrs there and didn't finish browsing the store. Got thru about maybe 75% of the lower level, didn't make it to the 2nd floor. Huge archery and fishing section.

I was turned off by their gun sign and wasn't planning to revisit. But I think I'll give them a call and see what their true position is. I'd definitely would do another visit if their sign is just for people selling their firearms.

I think it takes a Platinum card to check anything out of their "library".

From what you have said you should be alright in carrying, but it sounds as if when you were trying on the jackets you intentionally displayed. :?:

I've been to Cabela's in Buda. It's not a 30.06. You can carry there. I agree with Elgato. Intentional display. :???: :???:

I probably should be more specific, I think store employees may have seen me based on what my friend told me. He asked me while we were driving home that if I noticed a few people looking, and I said no.

When I try on clothes and carrying OWB (which sometimes happen like this time), I face the holster towards the clothes rack.

I would still be very careful. Eyes are everywhere. How about a dressing room. Carry a pair of pants with you and try on a whole ensamble and see if you print.
