carrying a gun before shooting it

You can just about add $200 to the purchase price of any semi auto for the recommended 200 rounds or carry ammo shot through one before you can trust it.

If a gun will run with range ammo it will run with SD ammo 20-50 rounds of your chosen SD ammo will tell you if your gun likes the ammo or not. I have never fired 200 rounds of carry ammo to prove a gun. Now 500 rounds of range ammo? That's another story. Carrying an unproven gun regardless of type or manufacturer is suicide. Don't forget to mark and prove your mags they are the weakest link in an semi auto pistol.

Not exactly the best way to do it but if you need one I say it would be better to have it than nothing.
Make sure it is clean & oiled. Get some practice ammo ASAP & to the range soon as you have the opportunity.

I have done it, I confess. BUT the only time was the Nork I just bought from HV & he had already verified it reliable to my satisfaction.

I'd carry one of LT's 1911's without shooting it for myself, no problem
But that's only because I know that he wouldn't own one, much less lend one to someone, unless it functioned 100% properly, every time

Now a factory new gun, that's a different story. I would not carry a factory gun without shooting at least one box through it, just to verify it actually works :)
Even if JMB Himself came to me, and handed me a 1911 that he handmade, but had never been fired.. I still wouldn't carry it without shooting it first.
... then, once it worked, I'd apologize profusely to him for doubting him

I carry the same HK P30 with same Speer Gold Dots JHP +p 124gr. This P30 is "dream handgun came true" very solid and reliable. Watch out for the your thumbs being clear from the slide release, or P30 may drop the slide on the last round.

So say someone was qualifieing with a revolver because they didn't want a semi auto... what would happen if they went to qual with the Taurus Judge.. I mean after the first 6 shots I'm sure you couldn't tell what you were hitting if you had it loaded with 410 shells.

we had a guy use a revolver to qualify . he was an amputee , so he was unable to rack a slide back .
he sure was a good shot though .

Don't think you could use one to qualify with. The caliber has to be .32 or greater. I'd think shotshells in a pistol wouldn't be allowed.

how did he reload?

all by his self ..he would flip the cylinder open , hold the gun under his other arm (amputated at the elbow) and use his good arm to reload . the instructor was very attentive and patient .

I made the mistake of carrying before testing a gun. Bought a Dan Wesson Bobtail commander last year from Cabela's in Buda. Got back to my hotel room, loaded up, and put my colt officer's up and carried the Dan Wesson the rest of the weekend. Got home to Corpus and test fired at the range and what do you know, the slide lock up on me after the second shot. I had stripped it and cleaned it before I went to the range. I had to have a gunsmith go over it and caught a burr in the slide that was the cause. But the point is that if I had to use it in Austin that weekend, I would have probably been screwed. Never again. Now I shoot at least 500 hundred rounds through a gun before I even think about carrying it as a Concealed weapon. Lesson learned I guess.

i have a confession...

i purchased my gun the day before my class .
it was a last minute thing .

the first 50 rds through it were at the shooting portion of the class .

fortunately , the gun performed flawlessly , but the night before the class, it was worrying me a little .

whew , i feel better now .

Must have been a Glock...



Not necessarily, although we'll have to get the actual word from USA1.
He used to have some brand of .380. Currently his carry is a Taurus PT-145.
