I've also read some studies claiming that at close ranges, you're more likely to die from a knife than a gun. I'd prefer to never test the theory, one way or the other.

Interesting. I've always been under the impression that "most" people who get into knife fights don't really know how to use them that well and use slashing motions instead of a stab. Unless they manage to nick a major artery, the most a slash is going to do to you is hurt a lot.

Not saying I don't believe you, but the only times I've actually seen people fight with knives they were drunk idiots who slashed at each other instead of going for a kill.

I really don't know what to say. When I was in the station doing paperwork as a patrol sergeant, I would take my belt off in the office, but I still had a Smith 37 in my pants pocket. WOW! Now as a desk jockey, I still carry a gun, even if it is not one on my belt, I still have one in the pocket. There is no excuse for her to act as she did in my opinion.

Of the NYPD officers I have known or associated with, they stated they were permitted to carry off-duty, they have a list of approved guns.

I've read all the "What ifs..." on this forum and the other where I originally read about this --- and I still cannot envision any scenario that justifies her actions, regardless of whether the internal affairs guys say she didn't break any rules. Off duty doesn't mean "not a cop," it just means you don't have to show up at a specific place and time. If you are tooling around in your car with your spouse and eight kids and you encounter the Dillinger gang, yeah, you might be best running off and calling for reinforcements. But off duty or on, she was a cop in POLICE STATION!

If she didn't have her gun with her, she was foolish, it jeopardized her life, and it forced her into an action that jeopardized the life of the guy being chased, and the other cops in the station. If she did have her gun, she was doubly cowardly, and again jeopardized others lives because she wouldn't do her duty. Somehow three other cops managed to figure it all out and put the guy down.

Diverting to the knife question -- me no knife expert either, but the ones I see teaching it teach stabbing AND slashing. Slashes do more than "hurt" -- they incapacitate through cutting tendons, ligaments, lots of blood vessels, and can eviscerate easily enough. Knives are dangerous at close range. If you have a gun and time to react, you can shoot. If you have time and you don't have a gun, well, I guess you can run away or try the hand-to-hand route...
